Monticello Lady Trojans drop a 69-52 district loss to Russell Co.
Melodie Phelps
News Editor

It was another slow start for the Monticello Lady Trojans on Friday

night at Russell County. The local squad found themselves down 10-0 early in

the game and never really recovered as they dropped a 69-52 district loss at

home.

³We started off pretty bad,² noted Lady Trojan Coach Marla Kelsch.

³Russell County got up 5-0 in about a minute. We called a timeout and then

they went up 10-0...We just got out the gate slow.²

The senior-dominated Lady Lakers team forced Monticello into early

turnovers and they made them count. Russell County led 17-8 at the end of

the first quarter.

³We turned the ball over too much. We had 23 turnovers and most of those

were in the first half,² Kelsch pointed out.

The Lady Lakers continued to roll in the second quarter, outscoring the

Lady Trojans 15-10 to take a 32-18 lead at intermission. The Lady Trojans

struggled from behind the arc in the first two quarters, hitting only one 3.

The second half, Monticello settled down and began shooting the ball

much better. They were outscored 13-11 in the third frame, but then began a

run in the fourth quarter that trimmed Russellıs lead to 9.

³I thought in the second half that we began to play a lot better,² said

Kelsch.

The 3ıs started to fall as Monticello hit 8 of them in the final two

quarters. They were 9 of 18 from behind the arc in the contest.

³We kind of got into our rhythm with the 3ıs,² said Kelsch.

Russell Countyıs Lindsey Morrison halted the Monticello run with two

back-to-back 3ıs. ³They hit some big shots and that hurt us,² said Kelsch.

Monticello was led by Sierra Adams with 16 points and Alesha Gehring

with 15 points. But as Kelsch noted it was a good team effort in the second

half, and Monticello got some help from its bench.

³Mary Beth Cooper came in and rebounded it well for us,² said Kelsch.

Cooper scored 5 points and finished with 6 rebounds to lead the MHS effort

on the board.

Monticello shot 47 percent from two-point range in the contest,

connecting on 17 of 36. They were 10 of 14 from the charity stripe for 71

percent.

Russell County was led by Amanda Henry with 15 points. Whitney Bledsoe,

Amy Ellis and Casey Pierce each scored 11. The Lady Lakers also had a

successful night from the charity stripe, hitting 19 of 22 for 86 percent.

³We didnıt play very well defensively,² said Kelsch, noting that her

team was credited with only one steal in the game.

³Weıve just got to have a better effort at the start of the game,² she

said. ³We canıt given anybody a 10-0 lead at the start of the game.²

Monticello was headed to Russell County earlier this week, as they

participated in the Lady Lakers Tournament. First up was Franklin County on

Monday night. Tournament games were also scheduled for Tuesday and

Wednesday.

There is a possibility that Monticello could play Russell County again

in the tournament, if both make it to the finals.
