Shannon Hutchinson
Sports Writer

The Wayne County Lady Cardinals met Washington County, last Monday at

Lexington Catholicıs Lady Knights Fifth Third Bank Holiday Classic.

The Lady Cards entered with a 6-1 mark and were coming off their first

loss of the season 84-29 to Lexington Catholic.

Washington County entered with a 2-4 record and opened the tourney with

a 32-23 win over Louisville Central, before a 66-36 loss to Eastern dropped

the squad to the consolation bracket.

Ashley Bell scored 9 of her team high 22 points, in the decisive fourth

quarter, as Wayne County ended the game on a 27-22 run enroute to claiming a

60-55 win.

The Lady Cards made 9 of 16 field goal attempts and 8 of 12 free throws

down the stretch, to improve to 7-1 on the season.

³The fourth quarter was one of our best of the season on both ends of

the floor. We really competed well and were able to do some good things in

transition. We made some outlet passes and had some breaks where it was

rebound, pass, pass and bucket. Our girls showed a lot of character to

bounce back from the loss the day before and get a win against a quality

team,² said Lady Cards head coach Tim Pyles.

Bell finished 7 of 17 from the field and 7 of 10 from the

charity-stripe, plus grabbed 7 rebounds with 4 assists, to pace three Lady

Cards in double-digits. The junior duo of Latoyia Green and Kara Gothrup

both contributed solid all-around games. Green netted 12 points and 8

rebounds, while Gothrup tallied 10 points, 6 assists and 3 steals. Seven

different Lady Cards scored in the win.

³We had a lot of people step up and do some positive things in this

game,² said Pyles.

Washington County, which dropped to 2-5, was led by the game high 24

points of Jane Goatley. Goatley finished 8 of 13 from the field, which

included a perfect 3 of 3 from 3-point range and tallied on 5 of 8 free

throws.

All-State candidate Brittany Edelen shot 10 of 24 from the field to

total 20 points, as five different Commanderettes scored in the contest.

³Washington County doesnıt have a great record, but they are a very

talented basketball team. Brittany Edelen may be the best athlete in the

state. Sheıs a major Division One player and has been contacted by all the

state schools,² said Pyles.

Goatley and Edelen opened with all 12 of Washington Countyıs points in

the first quarter, as the Commanderettes claimed a 12-6 lead.

Ashley Bell paced the Lady Cards with 4 points in the period, as Wayne

County opened a dismal 1 of 11 from the field.

Bell led all scorers with 9 points in the second stanza, as the Lady

Cards used a 20-7 run to own a 26-19 halftime lead. Wayne County shot 33

percent in the first half, while Washington County countered with 32 percent

shooting from the field.

The Commanderettes used three different scorers in the third frame and

limited the Lady Cards to just 2 field goals, to claim a 14-7 edge to knot

the score at 33-33.

Meg Latham scored 3 of her 5 points in the quarter, to pace the Lady

Cards.

Four different Lady Cards netted 5 points, or more in the final 8

minutes, as Wayne County used a 27-22 fourth quarter edge to take a 60-55

win. Junior reserve Brittany Gregory tallied 5 of her season high 7 points

in the frame, plus earned the notice of the head coach.

³Brittany Gregory stepped up big late and made two or three run-outs off

the break. Brittany really runs the floor well and we did a better job of

finding her with some nice passes and she finished the play,² said Pyles.

Washington County had chances late, but made only 6 of 12 free throws

and 7 of 15 shots from the floor in the final period. The Commanderettes

finished 21 of 53 overall for 40 percent and converted on 5 of 7 3-pointers

for 71 percent. The 5th Region squad tallied on 8 of 18 free throws for 44

percent and was plagued by 29 turnovers.

Wayne County made 18 of 48 field goal attempts overall for 38 percent

and connected on 4 of 17 3-pointers for 24 percent. The winners totaled 12

assists with 16 turnovers and etched on 20 of 29 free throws for 69 percent.

³This was a good bounce back game for our team. Washington County was

very talented, so hopefully weıll build on this fourth quarter effort down

the road and it will help us,² said Pyles.

The win advanced the Lady Cards into a consolation round finale with

Louisville Mercy.
