The Monticello Trojans traveled to Louisville recently to compete in the

St. Francis Invitational Tournament. The tournament was a two-day event with

five teams and was held in the old Male high school gymnasium.

On Friday night, the Trojans met up with Pikeville High School and got

off to a hot start. At the end of the first quarter, the Trojans led

Pikeville by 11 points. The second quarter went pretty much the same way.

At the half, Monticello led Pikeville by a score of 37-22. Monticello

held off Pikeville during the second half and ended with a solid 14-point

win over the team from Pikeville. The Trojans were led in scoring by Michael

Borden and Kyle Guffey who had 19 and 11 respectively.

³Itıs always good to give yourself an opportunity to play for a

championship early in the season,² said Coach Gary Abbott, ³and thatıs what

we did with our win on Friday night.²

Saturday night the Trojans faced Louisville Collegiate. Once again, the

Trojans got off to a good start and at the end of the first quarter led the

Louisville team by 13.

During the second and third quarters however, Louisville Collegiate

outplayed Monticello and trailed the Trojans by only 2 at both the end of

the half and after three quarters.

The game had been close through 24 minutes but Monticello picked up

their play in the fourth quarter. The last period was better for Monticello

as they put up 21 points in the final eight minutes to get another win. This

win was by 9 points with a final score of 62-53.

The win also made the Trojans the St. Francis Invitational champions.

On both Friday and Saturday night, Monticello had eight different

players score.

³We had a great team effort,² stated Coach Abbott, ³All of our guys play

hard and all our guys score. On any night, any of our guys might lead us in

scoring but they all play hard every night and work especially hard on the

defensive end every trip down the floor.² Coach Abbott went on to say ³Itıs

great to be undefeated at Christmas and have a tournament title to go along

with that.²

The Trojans will be in more holiday tournament action at McCreary

County, December 27-29. The Trojans hope to extend their winning streak past

7 games as they play in the McCreary County holiday tournament. The

championship game for the tournament will be held at 9 p.m. on Wednesday,

December 29 at the McCreary County gymnasium.
