Lady Trojans finish third in tournament

The Monticello Lady Trojans finished in third place in the Wendyıs

Holiday Classic at Russell County High School, closing out the three day

event with a 60-57 win over South Oldham.

The Lady Trojans lost to Garrard County in semifinal tournament action

on Tuesday night to drop into the consolation bracket. Monticello and South

Oldham squared off in an early game Wednesday, as tip-off times were moved

up because of the impending winter weather.

It was a game of spurts for the Lady Trojans, as they put together very

solid first and third quarter efforts. But South Oldham tightened it up in

the fourth quarter, and Monticello managed to hold on for the win.

³It was a good start for us,² noted Lady Trojan Coach Marla Kelsch, who

has watched her team struggle early in several games so far this season. ³We

also had a good third quarter, but we didnıt play real well in the fourth

quarter...I thought we were playing not to lose, instead of playing to win.²

Monticello jumped out to a quick advantage and held a three point lead,

11-8, at the first stop. South Oldham put together a good second quarter and

had pulled to within a bucket 26-24 by intermission.

The Lady Trojans scored 20 points in the third quarter and bolted out to

a 46-35 advantage as they headed into the final eight minutes. South Oldham

began to trim into that lead in the final eight minutes. They pulled within

two late in the game, but the Lady Trojans iced free throws down the stretch

to hold on for the win.

³It was a good team effort,² noted Kelsch.

The Lady Trojans were without the presence of starting point guard

Brittany Carrender, who was out because of a death in the family. Kelsch was

proud of the way her players responded and worked together to earn the win.

Monticello shot the ball very well for the game, hitting 47 percent from

the floor and 57 percent from behind the arc. They shot 66 percent from the

charity stripe. Kelsch was disappointed in the 28 turnovers the Lady Trojans

committed in the game.

The Lady Trojans were led offensively by Rachel Bristow with 25 points.

Sierra Adams scored 16 points and Alesha Gehring finished with 10. Bristow

and Adams were both named to the All-Tournament Team following the

tournament championship on Wednesday.

The Lady Trojans took a few days off for Christmas, then headed to

Northern Kentucky for the Villa Madonna Tournament, which began on Monday.

Monticello played Walton Verona in the opening round of the tournament.

³Thatıs always been a pretty good tournament to get into,² said Kelsch.

³There are a lot of good Class A and Class AA teams in it.²
