The Wayne County Cardinals met Lincoln County on December 27, in the
consolation round of the Lexington Catholic Fifth Third Bank Holiday
Classic.
The Cards owned a 3-7 record and were coming off a disappointing 84-55
opening round loss to Cawood.
The Patriots lost their tournament opener 63-47 to Highlands and entered
with a 3-6 mark.
The game marked the 36th meeting between the two schools and the second
time the teams have met this month. Wayne County opened their season with a
65-50 loss, at Lincoln County. The winner of the match up would advance into
a consolation contest with Owensboro Catholic.

win. Sexton scored 25 of his 35 points in the second half, as the Cards made
67 percent of their field goal attempts in the final half.
³Right now any win for this team is a good win, but this win was a good
win considering we lost to them by 15 points earlier this year. Steven
really carried us once again. He made big basket after big basket along with
some big rebounds,² said Cards head coach Rodney Woods.
Freshman guard Dustin Wells made 4 of 5 field goal attempts and totaled
12 points, as two Cards reached double figures.
Drew Guffey added a season high 11 rebounds with 6 points, as Wayne
County claimed an impressive 39-24 rebound edge.
³Dustin Wells had his second consecutive solid game and Drew stepped up
on the backboards. I have really felt like we are getting better even though
it doesnıt appear that way to our fans. This game proved we have made some
strides,² said Woods.
Lincoln County, which dropped to 3-7, was led by a trio of players with
10 points each. The backcourt of Kelly Reed, Ryan Young and Daniel Ralston
combined for 30 points, as the Patriots shot just 33 percent from the field.

³Our free throws were big again which is one area we are being fairly
consistent in. Plus we shot just over 53 percent from three, but again we
must do a better job of taking care of the basketball,² said Woods.
