The Wayne County Lady Cards met Pasco (FL) in the championship game in
the Florida Gulf Coast Holiday Classic last Thursday in Brooksville,
Florida.
The event, also billed as the Central Florida Shootout, was hosted by
Nature Coast Tech High School and all games were played at the NCTHS Gym.
The Lady Cards owned wins over River Ridge (FL) 61-22 and Lecanto (FL)
41-23, in the opening two rounds and owned a 9-2 record. Pasco entered the
third round match up with a 7-4 mark.
Tournament MVP Ashley Bell made 12 of 16 field goal attempts and 3 of 4
free throws, to tally 27 points as the Lady Cards cruised to a 69-25 final
round win. Bell, a 5-11 senior forward, grabbed 9 rebounds with 6 assists
and 4 steals, as Wayne County improved to 10-2 on the season.
³Ashley played under the most control at any point and time in her
career. She played such a smart game on both ends of the floor and had the
type of game that goes with being named Most Valuable Player,² said Lady
Cards head coach Tim Pyles.
All-Tournament selections Lindsey Dishman and Latoyia Green also helped
the cause with solid efforts. Dishman netted 11 points with 3 rebounds,
while Green totaled 8 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists.
³Lindsey and Latoyia both had solid games and I was happy to see us have
three players named to the All-Tournament team. I thought as a team we did
an excellent job of finding Ashley on the inside and she also did a great
job of kicking the ball back out for some good looks,² said Pyles.
Freshman guard Courtney Duncan added 7 points, while Kara Gothrup
contributed 5 points and 5 assists, as 10 different Lady Cards scored in the
tournament finale.
Pasco High, which dropped to 7-5, was led by the 8 points of guard Molly
Barthle. Caitlin Elliott and Megan Barthle tallied 6 points each, as Pasco
was plagued by poor shooting. The Florida squad shot a dismal 15 percent
from the field and committed 25 turnovers.
³Pasco had three of the better athletes we¹ve played against this
season. I thought our defensive pressure caused problems all week and was a
real difference in the styles of play. We kind of forced our style of play
and picked up some easy buckets,² said Pyles.
Ashley Bell netted 8 points in the opening quarter, as Wayne County made
8 of 15 field goal attempts and rolled to a 22-1 lead. Four different Lady
Cards scored in the period, while Pasco struggled to a dismal 0 for 14
effort from the field.
Lindsey Dishman scored all 11 of her points in the first half as Wayne
County used a 20-11 second stanza, to take a 42-12 halftime advantage. Kara
Gothrup added all 5 of her points in the period, as eight different Lady
Cards scored in the quarter.
Bell added 13 more points in the third frame, as Wayne County used a
17-10 tilt, to own a 59-22 lead. Pasco made 4 of 9 field goal attempts in
the period, while the Lady Cards converted on 8 of 11 field goal attempts.
The mercy-rule was in effect throughout the final quarter and the clock
didn¹t stop, unless a timeout was called. Wayne County didn¹t stop either
and cruised to an easy 69-25 win. Four different Lady Cards scored in the
fourth period, as the squad finished 5 of 8 from the field and limited Pasco
to just 1 of 9 shooting, over the final eight minutes.
³This tournament was a great experience for our team and to be honored
as the champions of the event was a nice accomplishment for our kids. This
was the best trip we ever had and this group of girls really like each other
and that makes taking trips like this so much more enjoyable. We had a great
group of parents make the trip and I¹m thankful for all their help as
chaperones. Overall it was just a good trip,² said Pyles.
Pasco finished 8 of 52 overall from the field for 15 percent and made 2
of 14 3-pointers for 14 percent. The squad connected on 7 of 15 free throws
for 47 percent and finished with 24 turnovers.
Wayne County shot a season high 28 of 47 overall from the field for 60
percent, which included 6 of 15 shooting from 3-point range for 40 percent.
The Lady Cards tallied on 7 of 12 free throws for 58 percent and totaled 21
assists against 19 turnovers.
The head coach was more than pleased with the out of state officials,
usually a sore spot on any out of state trip.
³Overall the three games were about as well officiated as any games I¹ve
been involved with,² said Pyles.
The Lady Cards have a week off before returning to the hardwood this
Saturday. The squad plays in the Kentucky Challenge at Lexington Catholic
against Regina (OH).
³We had this weekend off, which is the last time we¹ll have both
Saturday and Sunday off the rest of the season. After two straight
tournaments it will be good to get some rest, heal up a bit and go back to
work. We have a lot of work to do to prepare for a very good team in
Region,² said Pyles.
