The Lady Trojans put together a late rally and sank crucial free throws
in the final seconds to defeat Paintsville 43-40 and claim fifth place in
the Villa Madonna Tournament on Wednesday.
³This was a good win for us,² said Monticello Coach Marla Kelsch..
³Paintsville is a good team.²
It looked to be a good matchup from the start and the fans were not
disappointed. Monticello trailed early but caught Paintsville in the second
half on the way to the win.
Kelsch was very pleased with the way her team responded, despite the
fact they had gone to the wire with Walton Verona two days earlier before
suffering a loss.
³It was our determination not to lose,² said Kelsch, as she talked about
the win which put her team at 7-5 on the season.
Monticello didn¹t get a great start and scored only 3 points in the
opening quarter. Paintsville led 8-3 at the stop. The Lady Trojans scored 10
points in the second quarter, but still trailed 20-13 at the half.
³After halftime, we came back and played well,² said Kelsch.
The Lady Trojans erased the deficit in the third quarter and led by 2,
34-32, going into the final eight minutes.
Monticello trailed by 1 point with 12 seconds to play, and the Lady
Trojans were forced to foul to stop the clock. Paintsville stepped to the
line and missed the free throw. Alesha Gehring grabbed the rebound for
Monticello.
Monticello got up the shot, but missed. Gehring grabbed another board
and as she took it back up to the basket, she was fouled. Apparently, the
Paintsville coach was not pleased with the call, and he was called for a
technical after protesting to the referees.
With seven seconds to play, Gehring sank two free throws to give
Monticello the one point edge. Sierra Adams hit the two shots on the
technical to ice the win.
Adams led the Lady Trojans with 24 points, capping a tremendous
tournament. She was named to the All-Tournament Team following the
championship game on Wednesday.
Monticello shot the ball fairly well in the contest. They were 11 of 15
from the charity stripe for 73 percent. They hit 13 of 31 from two-point
range for 42 percent. But the 3¹s were not falling for the Lady Trojans on
Wednesday. They finished only 2 of 13 for 15 percent.
Kelsch was pleased with the tournament, noting that it featured some
great Class A competition. Bishop Brossart came away as tournament champion.
³This was a good team experience,² noted Kelsch.
Monticello took a break from action for several days. Their next contest
will be at Russell County on Friday night, as they take on the Lady Lakers
in an important district matchup.
