Council tables ordinance to accept road into city system
Melodie Phelps
News Editor

After a lengthy discussion Monday evening, members of the Monticello

City Council decided to table the second reading of the ordinance that would

include Barnes Drive and Rolling Hills Boulevard in the city street system,

until a more detailed estimate of repair costs can be obtained.

Several of the five new city council members had questions about the

ordinance, which had actually had its first reading during the December

meeting before the previous council.

The city had initially agreed to take the streets in, if Patrick Barnes,

who petitioned to have the streets included in the city system, paid for

half the cost of repairs to the two streets.

The heavily traveled area includes the streets that run beside the

Monticello Post Office, as well as behind the facility.

Barnes had provided the council with an estimate last month that

included about $1,800 in repair work.

Monday night, council members questioned whether the repair work

included widening of two curves Rolling Hills Boulevard and the other at the intersection of Rolling Hills

Boulevard and Hardwood Drive.

Councilman Gene Jones said he would rather make sure that both these

areas were included in the repair estimate.

Councilman Dan Daffron made a motion to table the ordinance until more

detailed repair work estimates are received. Councilman Alvin Sexton

seconded the motion, which was unanimously approved.
