Trojans defeat McCreary Central Raiders 72-57
Greg Rankin
Sports Writer

Friday night, January 7 was a homecoming of sorts for the Monticello

Trojans.

After playing on the road for almost a month, the Trojans were glad to

be back playing at home.

On this night, they would face the McCreary Central Raiders in what

would be the third contest between the two teams in less than a month.

Monticello won both the earlier meetings.

Only one of those games had been for district tournament seeding

purposes however.

This game would count toward the seeding of the district tournament so

it was an important game for both teams.

Monticello would defeat the Raiders by a score of 72-57. The win put the

Trojans record in district play to 2 wins and no losses.

For seeding purposes, the Trojans have four wins due to Wayne County

forfeiting two games during the season.

These two games donšt count on anyonešs record, only for seeding in the

district tournament.

Monticello and McCreary traded shots early in the first quarter. After

eight minutes, the Trojans held a slim 2 point lead. The second period was

much better for Monticello. They forced several turnovers in the quarter and

shot the ball well.

They were able to put together a couple good runs against the Raiders

and stretch their lead to 12 by halftime.

Monticello was still hot in the third quarter.

Full court pressure by the Trojans forced turnovers by McCreary and lead

to easy baskets for Monticello. The Trojans scored 22 points in the third

quarter.

At one point, they held a 21 point lead and looked like they might

stretch it further. After three quarters, Monticello was in the lead with a

score of 51-34.

McCreary Central scored over half of their 57 points from the free throw

line. They made 29 out of 43 attempts.

During the second quarter, all their points came from the line. The

Raiders didnšt make a shot from the field during the second period. For the

game, Monticello shot 29 free throws and made 16.

Monticello had a much better night scoring on this occasion than in

their previous outing. Four players reached double figures.

The Trojans were lead in scoring by Michael Borden with 17.

Billy and Phillip Inman had 10 and 11 points each while Sam Jenkins

added 10.

Every player saw game action. The Trojans were able to play younger

players late in the fourth quarter and give them some varsity experience.

The Trojans next opponent will be Lynn Camp on the road and then the

Trojans return home for another district contest.

This time they will face the Russell County Lakers on Friday, January 14

at the Monticello gymnasium.

It will also be Homecoming night at Monticello.
