Lady Trojans lose to Russell County 78-57

The Monticello Lady Trojans traveled to Russell County Friday night for

a district match up.

The Lady Lakers used good offensive efforts in the second and third

quarter to earn a 78-57 win over Monticello.

The contest was the first game back after about a weekıs holiday break

for the Lady Trojans. But the days off didnıt seem to be a factor.

The Lady Trojans came off the gate ready to play. They jumped ahead

early and built a 6-point lead midway through the quarter.

³The way we started off...that was the best start we had had in a

district game,² noted Monticello Lady Trojan Coach Marla Kelsch. ³I thought

that we were ready to play and this was going to be a ball game...Then we

just fizzled out in the second quarter.²

The Lady Lakers rallied and cut it to a point 13-12 at the stop. Sierra

Adams, who led all scorers with 31 points in the game, scored 5 in the first

quarter.

But Adams picked up a quick second foul and was on the bench for several

minutes in the second quarter.

³Sierra sat out about three minutes and then I made the decision to get

her back in the game to try to stop the run,² said Kelsch.

The Lady Lakers enjoyed a 29-13 run in the second quarter points by guard Casey Pierce Kelsch didnıt get the response from her team in the third quarter that

she would have liked to see. Adams was the only Lady Trojan to score in the

period, with 13.

³We just didnıt have anybody else step up for us in the third quarter,²

said Kelsch. ³Sierra was the only one scoring.²

Meanwhile, the Lady Lakers scored 22 points in the frame to take a 63-39

lead to the final quarter. Monticello could regain only a little of the lost

ground in the fourth period, as they outscored Russell County 18-15.

³Russell County really had some senior leadership,² stated Kelsch. ³The

Ellis girl really stepped up for them and you could really see their senior

leadership.²

Kelsch saw some good leadership from a couple of the Lady Trojans.

³I feel like Molly Vaughn had a really good ball game,² said Kelsch.

³Defensively, she played well and she held the Robertson girl to only 6

points...Molly and Sierra both stepped up for this game.²

Adams had an exceptional night shooting. She connected on 44 percent of

her shots on the way to the 31 point performance.

As a team, Monticello didnıt fare quite so well. The Lady Trojans shot

only 31 percent from the field. They were 14 of 23 from the charity stripe

for 61 percent.

³I donıt like to see us not play hard,² said Kelsch. ³We had people who

just didnıt play hard...We were standing around and watching...We werenıt

getting after them defensively.²

³I just didnıt see that in the two tournaments we played in,² said

Kelsch.

Monticello will be back in action Thursday night at Garrard County High

School. The Lady Trojans will participate in the Holiday Inn Express Classic

this weekend at Wayne County High School. They will play Whitley County

Saturday at 1 p.m.
