Frankfort tops Wayne Co. 75-64 in Boys Kentucky Preps Classic
The Wayne County Cardinals met Frankfort, last Saturday afternoon at the
Farnham-Dungeon Convention Center, in the 2005 Kentucky Preps Classic.
The Cards entered the first ever meeting between the two schools with a
4-9 mark, while Frankfort owned a 10-4 record.
The Panthers, one of the better teams in the always rugged 11th Region,
were playing just their second game under the guidance of head coach Brad
Mefford.
Mefford took over the bench duties from Devon Norman earlier in the
week.
Frankfort shot 54 percent from the field and used the 31 points and game
high 18 rebounds of Tory Robertson to claim a 75-64 win.
Robertson, a 6-4 forward, finished 12 of 24 from the field and 7 of 10
from the charity-stripe, plus tallied 4 assists as the Panthers won for the
second straight night to improve to 11-4 on the season.
³Robertson is as gifted as anyone weıve played against this season. He
can shoot the ball from the outside and put the ball on the floor and take
it to the basket. He has all the pieces,² said Cards coach Rodney Woods.
Zach Smith added 12 points and Joey Hyatt tallied 11 points, as three
different Panthers reached double figures. Nine different Frankfort players
scored in the contest, as the winners dominated the backboards with a 35-17
rebound advantage.
³Frankfort has a very athletic team with a couple of really good
shooters, plus some solid rebounders on the inside. They just hammered us on
the boards, even though I thought at times we did a better job on the
defensive end. We were out with hands in their face and when they missed
their shots, they would just go get it and put it in. Put-backs were a
back-breaker in this game² said Woods.
Wayne County, which dropped to 4-10, was led by the season high 36
points of senior guard Steven Sexton.
Sexton shot 10 of 10 from the charity-stripe and 10 of 22 from the
field, which included 6 3-pointers.
The stalwart also eclipsed the 1,500 point mark for his career and now
has 1,516 points.
Sexton tallied a game high 9 assists with 4 steals.
³Steven was responsible for a bundle of our points, when you consider
most of his assists led to 3-pointers and he scored 36 points. He really
played well and got hot in the second half and really lit it up,² said
Woods.
Freshman guard Jacob Gregory added a career high 12 points with 4
rebounds, while Wesley Dick finished with 7 points and 3 steals, as six
different Cards scored in the contest.
Four different Wayne County players etched the scoring column in the
opening frame, as the Cards made 6 of 13 field goal attempts and claimed an
18-17 lead.
Tory Robertson led all scorers with 9 points in the quarter and finished
with 15 points in the first half.
Frankfort made 8 of 11 shots in the second stanza and used a 19-8 run to
take a 36-26 halftime advantage.
Steven Sexton heated-up for 15 points in the third frame, as the Cards
made 9 of 14 field goal attempts and used a 25-20 edge to close the gap to
56-51, after 24 minutes.
Frankfort answered with 7 of 10 shooting of their own in the final
period and ended the game with a 19-12 run to take a 75-64 win.
Sexton tallied 10 of Wayne Countyıs 12 points in the quarter and
finished the second half with 25 points.

Decker contributed 2 points each, as six different Cards etched the scoring
column.
A review of the stats shows Frankfort shot 30 of 56 overall for 54
percent and tallied on 4 of 14 3-pointers for 29 percent. The Panthers
connected on 11 of 20 free throws for 55 percent and totaled 15 assists with
8 steals, against 13 turnovers.
Wayne County shot 21 of 46 overall for 46 percent and converted on a
season high 12 of 27 3-pointers for 44 percent. The squad made 10 of 10 free
throws for 100 percent and totaled 12 assists, 7 steals and 15 turnovers.
Up next for the Cards is a Saturday night contest at Clinton (TN).
Wayne County has met the Dragons four times, all in the championship
game of Cardinal Classic, but this marks the Cards first trip to Clinton
(TN).
³Iım sure theyıll be ready for us with our success against them in our
tournament in the past. It should be a good game for us,² said Woods.
