Regina (OH) defeats Lady Cards 96-49 in Lexington Catholicıs Kentucky
SHANNON HUTCHINSON
Sports Writer

The Wayne County Lady Cardinals met Regina (OH) last Saturday at

Lexington Catholic High School Gym, in the Kentucky Challenge.

The Challenge is a one-day event that features girls and boys teams from

across the state pitted against top teams from other states.

The Lady Cards entered the match up owning a three-game winning streak

and a 10-2 overall record, while Regina (OH) owned an impressive 9-1 mark.

The contest marked the first ever meeting between the two schools.

Regina guard Carla Jacobs totaled a game high 27 points with 4 rebounds

and 4 assists, as the Royals cruised to a 96-49 win.

Monique Godfrey added 14 points with 10 steals and 6 assists, while

Kalynnx Proctor netted 14 points with 5 boards, as the Royals improved to

10-1 on the season.

The duo of Shay Selby and Reecy Mitchell tallied 12 points each, while

Kristina Walton grabbed a game high 10 rebound with 4 points, as nine

different Royals scored in the contest.

³Regina and Lexington Catholic are two of the most talented teams weıve

ever faced since Iıve been involved in the program. They were very good in

every spot and nine deep, so we had our hands full. The thing thatıs so

impressive is they didnıt drop-off any from one through nine and we just

werenıt ready for that type of effort. As a team I was disappointed that we

didnıt compete, but I thought some of our younger kids really stepped up,²

said Lady Cards head coach Tim Pyles.

Wayne County, which committed a season high 42 turnovers and dropped to

10-3, was led by reserve center Meg Latham.

Latham, a 5-11 eighth grader, netted a team high 17 points with 6

rebounds and no turnovers in just under 21 minutes of action.

³I thought our trio of eighth graders in Meg, Heather and Kayla really

stepped up and played with the enthusiasm and courage needed. Usually we

tell our younger kids to follow the lead of our experienced players, but

this was a game where we needed the opposite. We have to be ready to compete

no matter what the odds are,² said Pyles.

Heather Stearns totaled 7 points and 3 assists, while Kayla Jones

produced 5 points with 3 assists in a season high 21 minutes of action, as

the trio of youngsters accounted for 23 of the squadıs 49 points.

³I think if weıre looking for positives in this game it would certainly

start with Meg. After that I thought Heather and Kayla were able to do some

solid things at times,² said Pyles.

Wayne County was without the services of starter Courtney Duncan, due to

a knee injury, and Mandi Perkins played limited minutes, due to a back

injury.

Senior Ashley Bell paced the starters with 9 points, 8 rebounds and 5

assists, in just over 24 minutes of action. Latoyia Green totaled 6 points

and 5 rebounds as seven different Lady Cards scored in the loss.

³We certainly couldnıt go as deep as we needed to with our injuries and

really ran out of gas late,² said Pyles.

The Royals used the 11 points of Carla Jacobs and six different scorers

to claim a 25-14 lead.

Meg Latham paced the Lady Cards with 6 points in the opening frame, as

Wayne County opened 5 of 13 from the field.

Regina shot 55 percent from the field in the opening half and used a

24-11 second stanza to take a 49-25 halftime advantage.

Six different Lady Cards scored in the first half, as the squad

converted on 39 percent of their field goal attempts.

Latham added 7 points in the third quarter as Wayne County used a 12-11

edge to close the gap to 60-37, after three frames.

The Lady Cards picked up the defensive intensity in the period and

limited the Royals to just 5 of 18 shooting from the field.

³We did some good things in the third quarter, but we ran out of gas and

they made us pay late,² said Pyles.

Regina exploded for 15 of 20 shooting in the final eight minutes and

closed the game on a 36-12 run, en route to a commanding 96-49 win. Six

different Lady Cards scored in the fourth quarter, led by the 3 points of

Ashley Bell.

A review of the stats shows Regina High made 43 of 71 shots overall for

61 percent, which included 3 of 7 shooting behind the arc for 43 percent.

The Royals owned a 32-28 rebound edge and connected on 11 of 18 free

throws for 61 percent. The winners totaled 33 steals and 23 assists, against

18 turnovers.

³Regina has an outstanding team and they are solid in all areas,² said

Pyles.

Wayne County finished 16 of 40 overall for 40 percent and converted on 6

of 13 3-pointers for 46 percent. The Lady Cards made 11 of 18 free throws

for 61 percent and tallied 15 assists with 8 steals. The squad committed 42

turnovers, which led to 52 Regina points.

Brittany Gregory contributed 3 points and Lindsey Dishman netted 2

points, to round out the seven Lady Cards in the scoring column.

The squad returns to district action this week with a home game with

McCreary Central on Monday night and a road trip to district favorite

Russell County on Thursday night.

³This is a very big week for our basketball team and we have a lot of

work to do. It will be interesting to see how we respond to the challenge

ahead,² said Pyles.
