Wayne County Board of Education members take oath of office

News Reporter
It was the first regular meeting of the new calendar year for the Wayne
County Board of Education, and there were some new faces at the table this
time as four new board members served at their first meeting.
New board members Donna Blevins, Larry Muse, Patty Roberts, and Melissa
Upchurch were administered the two oaths of office by board attorney Gordon
Germain and began their four year terms of office.
The first order of business for the new board members was to elect a
chairperson and vice-chairperson. The board decided to keep Perry Elam as
the chairperson for the Wayne County Board of Education and elected Patty
Roberts as the vice-chairperson. Elam and Roberts will serve a one-year
term.
The board members then set the board meeting schedule for the third
Monday of each month at 6 p.m. in the board room of the central office.
Following these routine business matters, the board then addressed the
other items of business on the agenda.
The board heard a report from Superintendent John Dalton who gave
members a brief overview of the new middle school construction project.
Dalton informed board members that after considerable study of the Wayne
County Schoolsı campus, the architects and engineers are recommending that
the new school be built close to the originally proposed location, the field
between the football field and the former health department building.
Dalton noted that the building has been relocated slightly to compensate
for the soil quality issues and the site work has been redesigned slightly
to accommodate the new building.
Two other locations on the Wayne County campus were considered for the
new building but following intense review it was determined that traffic
congestion would be a substantial issue at these other locations. A bid
package for site construction is expected in the coming months pending a
state budget being passed.
In other news, board members also recognized several students during the
recognition portion of their meeting.
The first group of students who were recognized by the board included
the middle and high school students who had passed the Presidential Fitness
Challenge Program. Each of these students were awarded certificates by board
chairman Perry Elam.
In addition, the public relations coordinator shared new approaches
implemented in regard to school nutrition and physical fitness throughout
the district. Also, physical education teacher Alvin Sexton shared the
criteria involved in qualifying for the different programs in the
Presidentıs Challenge Physical Activity and Fitness Awards Program.
The second group of students recognized by the board were Turnerıs sixth
grade academic team members. These students were congratulated for their
recent championship in the sixth grade academic showcase event, which
included six neighboring school districts.
Although the sixth grade academic team has placed second and third over
the past seven years, this was the first year they managed to place first
overall. The team members were recognized individually after entertaining
the audience with a mock quick recall match.
