Monticello School Board gets new chairman
SYLVIA MCGINNIS
News Reporter

Chris Dobbs became the newest member of the Monticello Independent Board

of Education Monday evening, January 17 when County Court Clerk Carol Jones

administered two oaths of office to him, along with current board member

Jerry Lair who retained his seat on the board.

Once the two oaths of office had been administered to the two newly

elected board members, the next orders of business were to elect a chairman

and vice-chairman.

Ronnie Sexton was elected as the chairman, replacing Jerry Lair, who has

served as chairman for several years. Jack Lair retained his position as

vice-chairman. Both of these positions are two-year terms.

In other action, board members discussed an out-of-state field trip for

the Monticello High School band to Kings Island in Cincinnati, Ohio on May

26. Superintendent Donnie Robison noted that this would be an all-day trip,

with the students leaving early in the morning and returning late that

night.

Robison expressed concern about the trip because he noted that would be

too long for the bus drivers to go without sleeping. He told board members

that he had asked Monticello Principal Johnny Chaplin to check into whether

or not any arrangements had been made for the bus drivers to get some rest

during the day so they would be alert that night when driving the students

home.

Robison recommended that the board postpone any action in the matter

until the next board meeting, giving him time to get the additional

information about sleeping arrangements for the bus drivers.
