Holiday Inn Express Classic Lady Trojans drop game to Whitley County
Melodie Phelps
News Editor

The Monticello Lady Trojans met Whitley County Saturday afternoon, as

they played in the Holiday Inn Express Classic hosted by Wayne County High

School. Monticello dropped a 61-44 loss in the contest.

It was a tale of two different halves for Monticello. The Lady Trojans

committed only 8 turnovers in the first half, and they kept Whitley County

off the boards. In the third quarter, Monticello committed 12 turnovers and

Whitley County got some easy buckets to build an 18-point cushion.

³We just donıt have any consistency,² said Monticello Lady Trojan Coach

Marla Kelsch. ³We just didnıt play well in the second half. They pressed us

and we turned the ball over.²

Like they had in Thursday nightıs game, Monticello got a great start in

the first quarter. They led 11-6 at the stop. Whitley County made a run in

the second quarter to edge ahead 21-20 at the half.

³We didnıt shoot the ball well in the first half, about 25 percent,²

said Kelsch. ³But we felt pretty good about the way we had played them

defensively.²

³The third quarter, everything was just the opposite,² noted Kelsch.

Whitley County went to the offensive boards and turned up the pressure,

forcing Monticello into 15 second half turnovers. Whitley County led 45-27

at the half.

Monticello shot only 27 percent from the floor. They were 16 of 29 from

the charity stripe for 55 percent.

³We didnıt shoot the ball well for the game,² said Kelsch.

The Lady Trojans were led by Sierra Adams with 20 points. Rachel Bristow

added 12.

Kelsch was pleased with the defensive effort of Molly Vaughn, who drew

the tough assignment of containing Whitley Countyıs leading scorer Kayla

Hanes. Hanes finished with 17 points.

³Molly did a nice job on her...I felt like Molly hustled, and she had 10

rebounds for us,² said Kelsch. ³She has really been stepping up her game.²

³Now, we have to have everybody step up their game on a consistent basis

for us to be successful,² she said.

Monticello played Wayne County Monday night in a district matchup.

Later this week, the Lady Trojans head into the All A 12th Region

Tournament. They meet the Lady Briar Jumpers at Somerset on Friday night at

8 p.m. A win Friday would send Monticello to the championship game on

Saturday night.

In the other bracket, Harrodsburg and Danville square off in the first

round. The winner of that game will play Burgin in the first game on Friday

night.
