Trojans win close one over Lynn Camp
Greg Rankin
Sports Writer

The Monticello Trojans took a long road trip Tuesday night when they

traveled to Lynn Camp. Lynn Camp had an eight game winning streak coming

into the game with the Trojans and was looking to increase that number.

The Trojans were coming off a big win over district rival McCreary

Central but would face a different style team in Lynn Camp. Two players from

Lynn Camp have already committed to play college basketball, one of them to

a Division I school so Monticello would have to play against a talented

basketball team. In the end, the Trojans came out on top 69-67 but not

before a long, hard game and overtime.

The first half was not good for the Trojans. After the first quarter

they only trailed by three, 20-17, but their play was not very sharp.

Turnovers and missed shots hurt the Trojans. In the second quarter

things became even worse for the Trojans. More turnovers and missed shots by

Monticello allowed Lynn Camp to pull away during the second quarter. Lynn

Camp outscored Monticello 24 to 14 in the second eight minutes. At the half,

the Trojans went to the locker room trailing by 13 points and looked like

they might get blown out.

After the half, Monticello seemed to find their rhythm. They controlled

the gamešs pace from the outset. Pressure defense and improved shooting

helped the Trojans put up 24 points in the third quarter and pull to within

6 points of Lynn Camp with only eight minutes to play. The final quarter was

close the entire way.

Both teams traded baskets and defensive stops. Both teams made plays

when they needed to in order to keep the game close. Late in the game

Monticello made two key defensive plays that gained them the ball and

allowed them to keep the lead and control of the game. Sam Jenkins drew a

charge in the lane with less than a minute to play and Justin Branscum

picked up a steal at half court in the final seconds. These two plays kept

Lynn Camp from scoring but also gave the Trojans momentum that seemed to

carry over into the next plays.

With four seconds remaining, Sam Jenkins stepped to the line for

Monticello. The Trojans had a 1 point lead.

Jenkins made the first attempt and missed his second shot. As Lynn

Campšs last second shot from the opposite free throw line missed, the

Trojans got their first close win of the season. This was the first time

this season Monticello had been tested in late game situations and they came

out on top.

Monticello was led in scoring by Sam Jenkins who posted 18 points and

pulled down 12 rebounds. It was his first double-double of the year. Phillip

Inman added 10 points with nine Monticello players scoring. ŗIt was nice

to have another good team effort and win a close game like this˛ said Coach

Gary Abbott, ŗOur guys showed character by coming out after halftime and

playing like they did.˛

With the win over Lynn Camp, Monticello improved their record to 10 wins

and 3 losses on the season.

They faced Russell County in a district match up on Friday and then

played Richmond Model on Saturday to finish two nights of basketball action

at Monticellošs gymnasium.
