The restoration work at the West-Metcalf house has hit a snag, after
1,000 of the antique bricks from the historic home were stolen from the
site.
The Wayne County Sheriffıs Department is investigating the theft which
occurred sometime between Saturday, January 15 and Monday, January 17. So
far, there have been no leads in the case, and Sheriff James Lynn Hill is
seeking any information that may lead to the recovery of the bricks.
³We hope that somebody saw something and they will call us with that
information,² said Hill, who noted that the antique bricks cannot be
replaced.
Several months ago, members of the Mill Springs Battlefield Association
began working at the site in an effort to shore up the historic home, which
is located in the Mill Springs area of Wayne County. It is the oldest brick
home in the county and dates back to the late 1700ıs, and it is also a
significant part of the Civil War history associated with the Battle of Mill
Springs.
The home was built by Revolutionary War soldier Isaac West. Norrie Wake
with the Mill Springs Battlefield Association said that bricks to build the
home were fired from clay that was found on the property.
Most of the work that has been taking place at the site has been
centered around stabilizing the deteriorating structure, until grant funding
can be obtained to actually restore the home. The house and a half acre of
property were donated to the Mill Springs Battlefield Association by Nick
Cooley.
Hill hopes that this matter will be resolved soon and the bricks from
the old home can be recovered. Anyone with information about who may be
responsible for this theft or who has any information about where the bricks
might be found is asked to call (606) 348-5416.
