Monticello Trojans bounce back with an 88-82 win over Berea
Greg Rankin
Sports Writer

Monticello played host to Berea Tuesday night, January 18. The Trojans

were coming in to the game with a 10 and 5 record, but had dropped their

last two games.

Berea came to Monticello with a 5 and 10 record having lost their last

two outings as well.

The Trojans were looking to bounce back from the two losses and stretch

their win total to eleven.

The last meeting between the two teams was last year, February 14, 2004.

Monticello came out on top in that match up by 17 points.

This yearıs meeting would also go well for the Trojans as they gained

another win with a final score of 88-82.

The Trojans started out the game playing well and built an early lead.

Both teams played at a fast pace and scored quickly. After one quarter,

Monticello led by a score of 28-21.

The high scoring by both teams would continue throughout the game.

Berea scored 17 points in the second quarter and Monticello added 19 to

their total in the second eight minutes to give themselves a 9-point lead at

the half.

Monticello stretched their lead over Berea during the third quarter and

after 24 minutes, the Trojans led by 13.

At the start of the fourth, Monticello continued playing well and

stretched their lead to as many as 21 points during the quarter.

Berea would not give up however. With consistent shooting from the floor

and some miscues by Monticello, Berea was able to trim Monticelloıs lead to

4 with under a minute to play.

Two made free throws by Michael Borden in the final seconds would seal

the game for the Trojans though, and they pulled out the win over a scrappy,

hard working Berea team.

It was a good win for the Trojans especially with several players

nursing injuries and not able to play at 100 percent.

Berea had three players get into double digits scoring. Their leading

scorer for the year, Quinley, put up 29 points. Dollins and Yosick also

added 21 and 10 respectively. Much of Bereaıs scoring came in the final

quarter.

They were able to score 30 points in the last eight minutes but it was

not enough against the Trojans to get a win.

³We felt pretty good after getting the win at home,² said coach Gary

Abbott, ³Our guys came back and played fairly well after a couple tough

losses. It was also nice to see so many people in the stands. Our fans are

loyal and very supportive and we really appreciate them.²

Phillip Inman led the Trojans in scoring with 29 points. Tuesday night

was also a big game for Michael Borden as he scored 25 against Berea.

Once again, the Trojans found points from many different places.

Eight different players scored in the game and all the Trojans shot well

from both the floor and the free throw line.

Monticello made 78 percent of their shots from the foul line and also

found the inside of the hoop from behind the three point arc, making 7 three

pointers.

Monticello was scheduled to play Williamsburg on Saturday night but the

game was cancelled due to inclement weather.

The Trojansı next outing will be Thursday night against one of the top

teams in the region, the Somerset Briar Jumpers.

The Trojans will travel to Burgin to play Somerset in the first round of

the 12th Region All ³A² tournament.
