Somerset defeats Lady Trojans 56-39
Melodie Phelps

The Monticello Lady Trojans knew what to expect Friday night, as they

faced a tough Somerset team in the semifinal round of the girls All A 12th

Region Tournament. Both teams have a rich All A tradition, and they have

split games the last couple of years during the tournament.

³In a game like this you know you have an opportunity to advance on to

the All A state tournament,² said Monticello Lady Trojan Coach Marla Kelsch.

But it would be Somerset that would take that opportunity as they

emerged with the 56-39 win at the Briar Patch. The Lady Jumpers advanced to

Saturday nightıs championship game, where they defeated Burgin and claimed

the title.

Monticello seemed ready to play in the first quarter. They kept pace

with the Lady Jumpers and trailed by only 2, 8-6, at the first stop. But the

second quarter was a killer.

³We just had a terrible second quarter,² said Kelsch. ³They just killed

us the last three minutes of that quarter.²

Somerset went on a 12-0 run to end the quarter and take a 28-14 lead at

the half.

³We just turned the ball over too many times,² said Kelsch.

The second quarter has been a problem for the Lady Trojans in a string

of recent games. Kelsch feels that the squad is coming out ready to play,

then becoming complacent in the second quarter.

³I think we just are happy with the way we played in the first quarter,

and we start to relax in the second quarter,² she pointed out.

Things didnıt look much better during the first couple of minutes in the

third quarter either. Somerset opened with another scorching run that put

them up 40-20.

Midway through the quarter, Monticello began a run that would get the

lead back into single digits. The Lady Trojans had narrowed it to 15, 42-27,

by the end of the third quarter. With 4:22 left to play, Monticello had

scrapped back to within 8, 46-38. Rachel Bristow led the effort with three

3-pointers during the run. Monticello ran out of gas, and the Lady Jumpers

went on a 10-1 run to end the contest.

³We just fizzled out in those last four minutes,² said Kelsch.

Bristow finished with 20 points to lead the Lady Trojans on the night.

She shot 50 percent overall from the floor and grabbed 8 boards.

³I thought Rachel played a pretty good game,² said Kelsch. Bristow was

the only Lady Trojan named to the All-Tournament Team following Saturday

nightıs championship game. Sierra Adams finished with 12 points.

Somerset had four players in double figures. They were led by Madison

Flowers with 18 points.

³Somerset has a nice team,² said Kelsch.

Kelsch hopes her team can take this experience and learn from it, as

they head into the last half of the season.

³I donıt think we are learning anything from our mistakes,² stated

Kelsch. ³We are on the same road we were on right after Christmas.²

Monticello traveled to Southwestern Monday night. They will host Pulaski

County Friday.
