Trojans lose to Somerset 72-29
Greg Rankin
Sports Writer

The Monticello Trojans traveled to Burgin High School Thursday night to

play in the 12th Region All łA˛ Tournament. Monticello went up against the

Briar Jumpers from Somerset, coached by Shawn Thacker.

` Going into the game, the Jumpers had a 14 and 3 record. The Trojans

carried a record of 11 wins and 5 losses. Somerset was the defending

champion of the 12th Region All łA˛ Tournament and looking to return to the

All łA˛ state tournament this year.

On Thursday night, they would get one step closer to that goal as they

knocked off Monticello in the first game of the tournament. The Jumpers came

out on top against the Trojans with a final score of 72-29.

The Briar Jumpers jumped out to an early lead on the Trojans Thursday

night and never relinquished that lead. After the first quarter, they were

ahead by 7 points and the game would never be any closer.

Monticello had several turnovers early in the game and missed some easy

shots inside allowing Somerset to stretch their lead late in the first

quarter. Somerset forced 2 turnovers on consecutive trips down the floor at

the start of the second quarter and turned them into lay-ups on the other

end. Monticello could never really recover.

The Trojans never found their rhythm against the Jumpers and by halftime

they trailed by 20 points.

During the second half, all the trends from the first half continued.

Somerset forced turnovers and turned them into baskets. Monticello missed

shots and allowed the Jumpers easy scores.

After 24 minutes, the game was all but over. Monticello showed no sign

of coming back and Somerset was still rolling. The score after three

quarters was Somerset 51, Monticello 25.

Monticello made only 4 out of 12 attempts from the free throw line for

the game. Also uncharacteristically, the Trojans made only 1 3-point basket

during the game.

Early in the fourth quarter, Coach Abbott put in many of his younger

players and allowed them to play the biggest part of the last eight minutes.

łAt that point, you just want to give your younger guys a chance to play

in a tournament atmosphere and get them some experience for later,˛ said

Coach Gary Abbott.

The fourth quarter was a learning experience for many of the Trojans.

They got the chance to play in a tournament game and atmosphere early in

their careers.

It was a big night for Somerset as they advanced to the finals of the

12th Region All łA˛ tournament.

They went up against the Danville Admirals Saturday night in the finals.

Somerset would come out on top in that match up as well and advance to the

Touchstone Energy All łA˛ Classic state tournament in Richmond, KY.

They will play Carroll County in the first round.

Monticellošs next outing will be Tuesday night. The Trojans travel to

Russell County for a district match up and a game that could decide which of

the two teams go into the 47th District Tournament with the number one seed.

It will be a busy week for the Trojans. After their district match up on

Tuesday, they will be on the road Friday night against Model and come back

Saturday night at home against Louisville Collegiate.

After two weeks with just one game each, Monticello will make up for

lost time with three games this week.
