The Wayne County Cardinals hosted 12th Region foe Boyle County last
Friday night at Cardinal Gym. The Cards entered with a 5-12 mark, while the
Rebels owned an 11-7 record on the season. The contest marked the 25th
meeting between the two schools, with Wayne County winning the previous four
games in the series, including a 47-45 overtime decision last March in the
opening round of the 12th Region Tournament.
Boyle County ended the game on a 42-20 run, which erased a 38-33
halftime deficit, en route to claiming a 75-58 road win. Guard David White
paced the attack with 20 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. White finished 9
of 14 from the field, while Clay Carter netted 13 points with 3 rebounds, as
the Rebels improved to 12-7 on the season.
Rebel reserve Scott Singleton added 12 points, on 4 of 7 shooting from
3-point range, as the winners dominated the backboards with a 39-17
advantage. Boyle County enjoyed a remarkable 23-2 advantage on the offensive
glass, a stat not lost on the Cards head coach.
³Itıs official Rebounding is just a matter of who wants to go get it the most and weıve
proved all year if a couple guys donıt go get it we wonıt,² said Cards head
coach Rodney Woods.
Wayne County, which dropped to 5-13, once again let a great individual
performance by Steven Sexton not be enough to secure the win. Sexton, a 6-1
senior guard, followed up a 40-point effort against Corbin with a game high
35 points.
The senior stalwart connected on 11 of 17 field goal attempts and 10 of
13 free throws, plus grabbed 5 rebounds with 3 assists.
³As a team weıve improved in a lot of areas, but our lack of rebounding
just kills us. Boyle County is a very physical team and we play way too
soft,² said Woods.
Freshman Cody Decker added a solid effort in the loss. Decker, a 6-6
center, netted 11 points with 6 rebounds and 2 assists. Wesley Dick netted 5
points, as six different Cards scored in the contest.
Decker and Sexton totaled 10 points in the opening quarter, as Wayne
County made 6 of 9 field goal attempts to claim a 15-14 lead. Four different
Rebels scored in the first frame, as the visitors opened just 5 of 17 from
the field.
Steven Sexton exploded for 17 points in the second stanza and Wayne
County used a 23-19 edge to own a 38-33 halftime advantage. The Cards shot
59 percent from the field in the opening half and committed just 5
turnovers, while the Rebels countered with 38 percent shooting from the
field.
³We did a lot of good things in the first half. To give up 16 offensive
rebounds and still be up five points shows we are improving in some areas. I
donıt know if weıve ever gave up that many offensive boards and had a lead
at the half,² said Woods.
Boyle County heated up in the third frame and used the 10 points of
David White to rally with a 23-13 run and claim a 56-51 lead.
The visitors made 8 of 12 shots from the field in the quarter, while
Sexton paced the Cards with 8 points.
Boyle County continued the onslaught in the final quarter and used the 9
points of Clay Carter to race to a 75-58 win. Wayne County struggled to 2 of
6 shooting from the field and 3 of 8 shooting from the free throw line, in
the gameıs final eight minutes.
Dustin Wells contributed 3 points, while Jacob Gregory and W.K. Allen
chipped-in with 2 points each, to round-out the six Cards in the scoring
margin.
Boyle County finished 27 of 58 overall from the field for 47 percent,
which included 4 of 13 shooting from 3-point range for 31 percent. The Rebs
made 17 of 26 free throws for 65 percent and totaled 13 assists, 5 steals
and 7 turnovers.
Wayne County shot 20 of 34 overall for 59 percent and made 6 of 11
3-pointers for 55 percent. The squad converted on just 12 of 20 free throws
for 60 percent and totaled 10 assists with 3 steals against 12 turnovers.
The win improved the Rebels to 10-15 all-time against the Cards.
Wayne County, with the cancellation of Tuesdayıs game with Pulaski
County, is open until Friday nightıs home date with Knox Central.
³Weıre going back to practice on Monday and trying to find some guys
that want to compete. We have a couple, but we have to find somebody that
wants to step up and go to work,² said Woods.
