Lady Trojans lose 51-48 at Southwestern
Melodie Phelps
News Editor

The Monticello Lady Trojans traveled to Southwestern on Monday, January

24, in a game that was filled with whistles. Fifty-two fouls later, the

young Lady Warriors squad had prevailed with a 51-48 win.

³They were constantly calling fouls,² said Monticello Lady Trojan Coach

Marla Kelsch, as she talked about the contest. ³You couldn¹t get any

consistency.²

Kelsch agreed that it was an ugly game to watch, but despite the large

number of fouls called, she didn¹t lose any players from action.

³Everytime somebody did anything, a foul was called,² said Kelsch.

That meant a lot of trips to the free throw line for everybody, but the

Lady Trojans struggled throughout the evening from the stripe. They

converted on only 24 of 54 for 44 percent.

³Anytime you miss that many free throws, it makes you sick,² said

Kelsch.

Shooting wasn¹t much better anywhere else for the Lady Trojans. They hit

only 8 percent from 3-point range, and they shot only 25 percent from the

field.

Southwestern dominated the first quarter, rushing out to a 21-12

advantage.

³We just weren¹t ready to play,² said Kelsch.

By the time the second quarter began, 20 fouls had already been called

and both teams were already shooting the double bonus. Southwestern

continued their pressure defense and forced several Lady Trojan turnovers.

Southwestern led 39-24 at the half.

³They¹re a young team, but they¹re playing better than we are right

now,² stated Kelsch. ³They start two eighth graders and the first one or two

off the bench are eighth graders.²

Monticello came out and put together a third quarter run to cut it back

to 10, 47-37.

³We played a lot harder in the second half,² noted Kelsch.

Monticello continued to whittle away at Southwestern¹s lead, scoring 11

points in the final frame, but they couldn¹t overcome the dismal first half.

³We didn¹t shoot well anywhere in this game,² said Kelsch.

Sierra Adams scored 19 points and Rachel Bristow scored 18 to lead the

Lady Trojans.

Kelsch noted there were only two real positives that came out of this

game for her team. The Lady Trojans committed only 14 turnovers, down from

their average of about 25.

Molly Vaughn stepped up her rebounding effort and pulled down 14 to lead

the war on the boards. She finished with 4 points as well.
