Humane Society seeks donation of land for building
Melodie Phelps

The Humane Society of Wayne County has a dream, but it needs some help

achieving that.

Someday, the organization would like to have an adoption facility for

animals here in Wayne County, a place where pets can be housed until they

are placed in a new home.

An estate has pledged a $10,000 donation to the Humane Society, but they

need to have property and a plan underway by the end of this month. That¹s

where local residents can step in and help.

With a land donation to the Humane Society, the money that has been

pledged from the estate can be used to help build the adoption facility.

³This will not be like an animal shelter, where animals are kept for

five days and then put down,² explained Sherry Martin, with the Humane

Society of Wayne County. ³This will be a place where animals can be taken

care of until they have a home.²

It would answer a great need for the Humane Society, since currently the

organization helps finds homes for some of the stray animals that people

find.

Currently, there are a few members of the organization who are providing

foster care for animals that are found.

They feed, house and care for them until a permanent home can be found.

They need more space to do this type of work.

Martin said the ideal piece of property would be from two to five acres

and would be fairly accessible. It must also have city water so that cages

and holding pens could be kept clean and sanitary.

Martin noted that on several occasions the Humane Society has had to

rescue larger animals, like horses, that have been neglected, and that is

why they need a little acreage.

Larger animals could be housed and cared for on the property as well.

Martin noted that the best scenario would be a donation of land, which

would be tax deductible.

She said that this has to be in place by the end of the month or the

Humane Society will lose the monetary pledge from the estate.

³If we have to give this money back, then we fear that there will never

be an adoption center here,² she said.

Anyone who has property they would like the Humane Society to look at

should call (606) 348-3640, (606) 340-0311 or (606) 348-7414.

³They can set up an appointment and we¹ll come and look at the

property,² stated Martin.
