³We just canıt put the ball in the basket...We missed too many easy
shots. We missed too many put backs and we missed too many layups,² said
Monticello Lady Trojan Coach Marla Kelsch, after her team dropped a 57-42
loss to McCreary Central at home Friday night.
It was a game that Kelsch hoped to see her team make a turnaround, after
losing seven straight contests. But the Lady Trojans didnıt look like they
were ready to play from the opening tip on Friday. They scored only 8 points
in the opening frame and McCreary Central led 15-8 at the stop.
³I donıt think we came out ready to play,² said Kelsch. ³Itıs like we
came out in slow motion.²
Things didnıt look any better in the second quarter, as Monticello
continued to struggle offensively. On the other hand, the Lady Raiders
flourished, scoring 22 points in the frame. They were led by junior guard
Tara Tucker who scored 11 in the quarter, including three 3-pointers.
³We broke down a little bit on defense,² noted Kelsch.
McCreary Central held a 16-point edge, 37-21, at the half.
Monticello put together a better second-half effort, but they couldnıt
make a serious run at the Lady Raiders.
³We played pretty good in the third quarter, but we were so far behind
by then,² said Kelsch.
Monticelloıs defense held McCreary Central to only 8 points in the third
quarter. The Lady Trojans trailed 45-32 at the end of the quarter. McCreary
Centralıs sophomore forward Lindsey Waters scored 7 of McCreary Centralıs 11
points in the final quarter to seal the win.
Monticello was led by Sierra Adams with 14 points. She was the only Lady
Trojan in double figures. Alesha Gehring added 8 points.
Waters finished with a game-high 21 points. Tucker finished with 19
points.
For the game, Monticello shot only 27 percent from the floor. They shot
19 percent from behind the arc and 53 percent from the charity stripe.
³Our field goal percentage has just been getting worse and worse,² said
Kelsch.
With the loss, Monticello finishes in a district tie with McCreary
Central. A coin toss, scheduled this week, will determine whether Monticello
or McCreary Central will finish in the number three seed in the 47th
District.
Monticello hosted North Laurel in action on Monday night. Friday night
they will play Berea.
³We have got to try to keep a good positive attitude, and keep plugging
away and hope the next game itıll turn around,² said Kelsch.
She said her team does a lot of shooting drills and she doesnıt believe
fatigue has been a factor in their shooting woes.
³I just think it is mental,² she said. ³Weıve got to have that
leadership to pick us back up.²
