Trojans beat Louisville Collegiate
Greg Rankin
Sports Writer
Monticello played host to Louisville Collegiate Saturday afternoon. The
Trojans were coming off two tough losses earlier in the week but were hoping
to get a win against a big and quick Louisville Collegiate team.
This was the second meeting between the two teams this season. The first
clash came in the finals of the St. Francis Invitational during the
Christmas break. Monticello defeated Louisville Collegiate 62-53 December 18
to win the St. Francis tournament.
Collegiate was ready to play from the start and looking for payback
against the Trojans. Early in the game, Collegiate looked like they might
pull away from the Trojans and gain an easy victory but looks can be
deceiving. Monticello pulled out the Arin over Collegiate 71-56.
Louisville Collegiate started out the game shooting well and getting up
and down the floor quickly. The Trojans didnšt recover down the floor quick
enough several times and Collegiate got some easy lay-ups early in the game.
The Trojans found themselves down by as much as 11 points in the first
quarter and it looked like Collegiate might keep adding to their lead.
Monticello didnšt fold however, and by the end of the first quarter, the
Trojans had cut the lead to 5 points.
The second quarter was much better for the Trojans, Monticello outscored
Louisville Collegiate in the second eight minutes 12-4 and was able to build
a small lead by halftime. The Trojans went into the break with a 3-point
lead.
During the third quarter, Monticello took the lead and would never look
back. The Trojans led by 2 points after three quarters.
The game remained close early in the fourth quarter but midway through
the final eight minutes, the Trojans began to pull away. Monticello
continued to find easy, open shots against Collegiatešs 2-3 zone and most of
them went in. Collegiate couldnšt find enough ways to put points on the
board to keep up with the Trojanšs fast scoring pace.
Monticello scored 30 points in the final eight minutes and finished the
game with a 15-point lead.
After struggling from the free throw line in two previous outings,
Monticello showed strong improvement Saturday. The Trojans made 75 percent
of their attempts (14-17). Louisville Collegiate made 10 of 18 attempts for
55 percent shooting from the foul line.
Two players for Collegiate reached double digits scoring. One of their
starting forwards, Grant, accounted for 27 of Collegiatešs 56 points.
The Trojans had a balanced scoring attack against Louisville Collegiate.
Three players reached double digits and seven players scored in the game.
The Trojans were led in scoring by Billy Inman with 27 points. Michael
Borden and Sam Jenkins added 12 points each.
Monticello will be in action Thursday night at Pineville. The Trojans
only have one game next week. Their next home game will be against Burgin
February 18.
Only five games remain for the Trojans in the regular season.
Monticellošs final home game of the regular season will be against Clinton
County February 22.
