Lady Cards defeat Southwestern 48-30
SHANNON HUTCHINSON
Sports Writer

The Wayne County Lady Cardinals hosted Southwestern, last Tuesday night

at Cardinal Gym, in a match up of 12th Region foes. The Lady Cards entered

with a 16-5 record and were looking to snap a two-game losing streak.

Southwestern owned a 7-10 mark overall and was riding a season high

three-game winning streak.

Senior forward Ashley Bell netted a game high 18 points with a game high

10 rebounds, as Wayne County opened the game on a 13-4 run and never looked

back en route to claiming a 48-30 home win. Bell shot just 5 of 17 from the

field, but made 8 of 10 free throws and contributed 4 steals, in just over

25 minutes of action.

Meg Latham, an 8th grade forward just inserted into the starting lineup,

responded to the nod with 14 points and 7 boards, as two different Lady

Cards reached double-digits.

³I thought we were able to do some good things on both ends of the floor

and get the win. After over a week off I think our legs were a little

fresher the day before the game, but we still battled and fought through it.

Next week weıre going to adjust our practice schedule, which should help us

come game-night,² said Lady Cards head coach Tim Pyles.

Heather Stearns added 8 points and 5 rebounds, while Latoyia Green

tallied 5 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Lindsey Dishman contributed 3

points, as just five Lady Cards etched the scoring column.

³We had some good looks at the basket, but this was another one of those

games where everything was a struggle,² said Pyles.

Southwestern, which dropped to 7-11, was led by the 12 points of center

Jaci Flynn. Seven different Lady Warriors scored in the contest, as the

squad shot just 31 percent from the field and committed 25 turnovers.

Four different Lady Cards scored in the opening quarter, paced by the 5

points of Ashley Bell, as Wayne County raced to a 13-4 lead. The hosts

connected on 5 of 13 field goal attempts, while Southwestern opened a dismal

2 of 11 from the field.

The Lady Cards used a balanced approach in the second stanza, to offset

a 5 of 14 shooting effort from the field. The hosts limited the Lady

Warriors to 3 field goals and used an 11-7 run to claim a 24-11 halftime

lead.

The trio of Ashley Bell, Meg Latham and Heather Stearns accounted for

all 11 of Wayne Countyıs third period points, as the Lady Cards used an 11-8

quarter edge to push to a 35-19 lead. The hosts made just 2 of 12 field goal

attempts and Southwestern responded with a 3 of 9 effort from the field.

The Lady Cards converted on 11 of 13 free throws in the second half and

used a 13-11 fourth quarter advantage to cruise to a 48-30 win. Bell led all

players with 7 points in the final frame, while four different Lady Warriors

scored in the period.

³We have to go back to work and look to refine some key areas. I thought

we shot free throws better, especially in the second half,² said Pyles.

A review of the stats shows Southwestern shot 12 of 39 overall for 31

percent, which included 4 of 19 from 3-point range for 21 percent. The

visitors made 2 of 6 free throws for 33 percent and totaled 13 steals with 5

assists against 25 turnovers.

Wayne County, which claimed a 37-25 rebound edge, made 16 of 50 field

goal attempts overall for 32 percent and connected on 2 of 15 3-pointers for

13 percent. The hosts tallied on 14 of 20 free throws for 70 percent and

finished with 15 steals, 4 assists and 19 turnovers.

The Lady Cards, now 17-5 on the season, have a very busy three game

week. The squad has road games at Somerset on Tuesday and Garrard County on

Friday night, then returns home Saturday night to host 13th Region foe

Cawood.

The Cawood contest, which will be played before the boys game with West

Jessamine, will be a very special night for former head coach Wayne Ryan.

The school plans to honor the coach with a special ceremony.

³We have two very tough games earlier in the week, but I do hope

everyone that can will come out as we honor Coach Ryan. Heıs meant so much

to our school and program, so hopefully a big crowd will be there for this

special night,² said Pyles.
