The Monticello Lady Trojans hosted North Laurel on Monday, February 7,
and despite taking a 55-45 loss, the local squad showed improvement in
several areas. They shot the ball better, they committed fewer turnovers,
and they put together a consistent effort throughout all four quarters.
³We did play better,² said Lady Trojan Coach Marla Kelsch. ³I thought we
played a pretty good game.²
Kelsch noted that Monticello lost starting guard Alesha Gehring during
the second quarter of the contest, when she was injured while driving to the
basket. Kelsch said that Gehring was taken to the hospital suffering bruised
ribs, but she was back in practice on Sunday.
³When Alesha went out that hurt us, but we had a lot of people step up
and help,² said Kelsch. ³Brittany Carrender played the point for us the rest
of the game and she did a good job.²
The Lady Trojans trailed by 1, 16-15, at the first stop. The two teams
played dead even in the second quarter and it was a 29-28 North Laurel lead
at the half.
Monticello¹s Rachel Bristow hit 2 3-pointers in the third quarter to
give Monticello a 34-32 advantage. North Laurel reclaimed a 41-37 lead at
the end of the third quarter.
Monticello had trimmed it back to 2, 41-39, early in the final quarter,
but North Laurel¹s post player Sarah Hughes scored 7 straight points to push
her team ahead 48-39.
³Hughes is a good post player and we had trouble containing her,² said
Kelsch.
Hughes scored 9 of her game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter, as the
Lady Jags took the 10 point win.
Monticello was led by Bristow with 18 points.
³I think Rachel played a good, solid game for us,² commented Kelsch.
³She shot 6 of 12 from the field for 50 percent.²
Sierra Adams scored 15 points and was 4 of 4 from the free throw line.
Monticello saw their shooting improve quite a bit in this contest. The
team had been shooting in the mid 20¹s over the last few games. Against
North Laurel the Lady Trojans shot 33 percent overall from the floor. They
shot 61 percent from the free throw line.
³Our turnovers were down,² noted Kelsch. ³We had only 8 for the game.²
North Laurel won the battle of the boards, 36-20, and Kelsch noted that
the Lady Jags benefited from quite a few offensive rebounds.
Despite the loss, Kelsch feels this contest may have given her team a
boost of confidence as they head into the final games of the regular season.
³I think it gives us a boost of confidence that we need right now,² she
said. ³It showed that we are moving in the right direction.²
Kelsch expects Gehring will be back in action this week, as Monticello
is scheduled for games at Harrodsburg and at home Friday against Burgin.
Both are doubleheader contests. Friday night is the Hall of Fame game for
Monticello, and the girls will play the second game of the evening.
