The Wayne County Cardinals traveled to Richmond last Friday night to
face homestanding Madison Central. The Cards were coming off a 105-83 loss
to Southwestern earlier in the week and owned a 6-14 record. The Indians
were coming off back to back losses to Lexington Catholic and Henry Clay and
entered with a 7-13 mark. The contest marked the eighth meeting between the
two schools, with the Cards claiming a 61-57 decision last February at
Cardinal Gym.
Madison Centralıs Duane Fields led four different winners in double
figures with 19 points, as the Indians broke-open a 26-22 halftime score
with a 23-10 third quarter run en route to taking a 72-51 win. Fields
finished 7 of 15 from the field, plus grabbed 6 rebounds and contributed 4
assists, as the 11th Region school improved to 8-13 on the season.
³We were able to change defenses a lot in the first half and I think
that bothered Madison Central some and made them a bit hesitant. In the
first half we were able to slow the game down, but to their credit they
turned up their intensity in the second half and we didnıt match it. They
were much more aggressive in the second half and just attacked the basket,²
said Cards head coach Rodney Woods.
Rob Hess added 17 points with 9 rebounds, while the duo of Rob Newman
and Aaron Morris tallied 11 points each respectively. Eight different
Indians scored in the contest, as the hosts enjoyed a 41-35 rebound edge,
which included a 20-13 tally on the offensive glass.
Wayne County, which dropped to 6-15, placed just one scorer in double
digits, led by senior guard Steven Sexton. Sexton shot 8 of 21 from the
field and 7 of 10 from the free throw line to net a game high 24 points,
plus totaled a team best 9 rebounds. The Cards shot 41 percent from the
field, which included a dismal 2 of 20 effort from 3-point range, plus
committed 20 turnovers in the game.
³We just didnıt have a very good night on the offensive end and that
started in the first half. We missed some shots early and if we make a
couple of those, we possibly couldıve had the lead at half, but we didnıt,²
said Woods.
Senior center Drew Guffey was re-inserted into the starting lineup and
finished with 6 points and 5 boards. Dustin Wells tallied 6 points, while
Cody Decker and W.K. Allen contributed 4 points each, as seven different
Cards scored in the contest.
Five different Indians scored in the opening period, as the hosts made
just 5 of 18 field goal attempts, but claimed a 13-7 lead. The Cards
committed 5 turnovers in the quarter and opened a dismal 2 of 10 from the
field.
Steven Sexton led all scorers with 8 points in the second stanza, as
Wayne County used a 15-13 run to close the halftime score to 26-22. Both
teams shot the ball better in the frame, as the Cards connected on 5 of 7
attempts and Central answered with a 5 of 10 effort from the field.
Duane Fields netted 8 points in the third quarter, as the Indians used a
23-10 run to open-up a 49-32 lead. The Cards managed just 10 field goal
attempts in the frame, while the hosts doubled that with 20 attempts of
their own.
Five different Indians scored in the fourth period as Central used a
23-19 advantage to cruise to a 72-51 win. Steven Sexton paced the Cards with
15 points in the second half, as Wayne County shot 44 percent from the field
in the final 16 minutes.
Madison Central finished 30 of 68 overall from the field for 44 percent
and tallied on 3 of 12 3-pointers for 25 percent. The squad converted on 9
of 16 free throws for 56 percent and totaled 16 assists with 10 steals
against just 7 turnovers.
Wayne County shot 19 of 46 overall for 41 percent, which included a 2 of
20 tally from 3-point range for 10 percent. The Cards made 11 of 18 free
throws for 61 percent and tallied 5 assists with 3 steals against 20
turnovers.
The Cards have a very busy upcoming week with three games on the slate.

North Laurel and West Jessamine on Friday and Saturday nights.
