Earthwork and site preparation for the new A.J. Lloyd Middle School
should begin later this spring, after the Wayne County Board of Education
approved final construction documents for the initial phase of the project
during a meeting on Thursday, February 17.
Tim Geegan, with Alliance Corporation, and Mike Spartan, with
Lucas-Schweringen, presented several sets of plans to the board, and
explained several of the changes that will occur on the campus during Phase
I of this project. By proceeding with the initial phase, Geegan noted that
the building pad can be prepared, drainage can be installed, and road
construction can occur when students are not in classes over the summer.
This will allow the district to get a head start on the building
project, construction officials informed the board Thursday evening. Geegan
noted that this portion of the project can be funded through a local bond
sale.
The board also voted to authorize Superintendent John Dalton to
advertise for bids on Phase I of the project. Geegan indicated that the
final construction documents will be at the Kentucky Department of Education
for approval by March 1. He anticipated that bids will be awarded by
mid-April and site work could begin by May 1.
The board also approved staff allocations for each school in the
district. Dalton recommended that the staff allocations for the next school
year remain the same as the current school year.
He noted that classrooms are staffed at capacity size, which either
meets or exceeds the Southern Association Accreditation Standards. Dalton
noted that this the third year that the board has opted to keep the same
staff allocations.
In other action Thursday, the board:
?Heard a report on student attendance for the current school year.
Officials reported that the current yearıs attendance is 95.35 percent,
compared to 93.86 for the same time during the previous school year.
?Adopted a resolution affirming the Wayne County Board of Educationıs
commitment to student achievement. This a resolution that the Kentucky
recommended each board adopt and post in each school as well as in each
school handbook.
?Declared seven trailers as surplus property to be disposed of by sealed
bids.
?Agreed to extend the Nextel contract for cellular phone service for a
period of one year for Universal Service Fund participated.
