Telecommunications Board to make offer to purchase property
Melodie Phelps

The Telecommunications Board will make an offer to purchase property

near the site of the cable television tower.

During a meeting on Wednesday, February 16, the board agreed to make the

offer of $15,000 for the 2.6 acres of property that is adjacent to the tower

site. The property, which is where anchors for the tower are located, is

currently being leased by the board at a cost of $500 per month.

The board met in executive session to discuss the possible acquisition

of property. After returning to open session, they voted to pursue the

purchase of the land.

The board also discussed the proposed fiber to the home upgrade project,

which has not yet been funded. Board chairman Wade Upchurch noted that they

are continuing to wait on a letter from the Governoršs Office of Local

Development concerning the project.

In the meantime, Upchurch suggested that the board go ahead and gather

all the plans and information for a $7.5 million fiber upgrade project.

Upchurch noted that the telecommunications service would need $1.5 million

in money to leverage enough funding for a $7.5 million project. Upchurch

indicated that $1 million remains in the statešs budget for this project.

The board expects to have more information at its next meeting.
