Trojans claim easy win over Burgin, 76-29
Greg Rankin
Sports Writer

The Monticello Trojans hosted Burgin Friday night at Monticello¹s

gymnasium. The meeting was the first and only between the two teams this

season.

Last season, the schools met twice with each team able to pick up one

win. The first match up last season went into quadruple overtime with Burgin

winning by one point.

Monticello came out on top in the second meeting, also winning by one

point.

This season, things were much different. The Trojans got an easy win

over the visiting Burgin team with a final score of 76-29.

Monticello jumped out to an early lead Friday night and never looked

back. They outscored Burgin 22-9 in the first quarter and 13-5 in the second

period. By halftime, the Trojans led by 21 points, 35-14.

The second half looked much like the first. Monticello continued their

quick scoring pace and built on their lead throughout the half.

They scored 20 points in the third quarter and 21 during the final eight

minutes to finish with a 47 point lead.

Burgin was only able to score 15 points in the second half.

Monticello¹s younger players received a lot of minutes in the second

half against Burgin. The Trojans substituted heavily throughout the second

half, allowing everyone to play.

The large lead gave Coach Abbott the chance to play many of their

underclassmen and get them some experience in a varsity game.

At one point early in the fourth quarter, four freshmen were on the

floor at the same time for the Trojans.

Nine different players scored for the Trojans in the win over Burgin.

Monticello outscored Burgin in every quarter and never allowed the

visiting team to score over 9 points in any period.

No player for Burgin reached double digit scoring. The one problem for

the Trojans Friday night came at the free throw line.

After several games with good shooting from the line, Monticello

struggled on this night making only 60 percent (18-30) of their attempts

from the charity stripe.

³It was a good win for us,² stated coach Gary Abbott, ³We played pretty

well and were able to get some experience for a lot of our guys. Hopefully,

we can continue playing well and get better every time we go out.²

The Trojans were led in scoring by Phillip Inman. He scored 24 points in

the game and his brother, Billy Inman, added 23 to the Trojan¹s total.

Monticello will play their final home game of the regular season Tuesday

night against the Clinton County Bulldogs.

It will be Senior Night for two of the Trojans. Billy Inman and Frank

Talley will play their final regular season game in Monticello¹s gymnasium.

The Trojans will wrap up the regular season Friday night when they

travel to Somerset to face off against the Briar Jumpers.
