W.C. Lady Cardinals defeat Somerset 60-47

The Wayne County Lady Cardinals traveled to Somerset last Tuesday night

to face the homestanding Lady Jumpers in the opening game of a girls-boys

doubleheader at the Briar Patch.

Both squads entered the 12th Region match-up with identical 17-5 records

and are considered favorites to make next monthıs 12th Region tournament at

McCreary Central High School.

Wayne County used the game high 30 points of senior forward Ashley Bell

and ended the game on a 19-6 run, to claim a 60-47 road win. Bell shot 10 of

25 from the field and 10 of 18 from the charity-stripe, plus grabbed a game

high 14 rebounds with 6 steals in just over 30-minutes of action.

³I really think Ashley came out playing with a lot of pride, which is

certainly something you expect out of a senior leader. Not only was she

competing against one of the regionıs better players in Madison Flowers, but

she knew the coaching staff was very disappointed in our lack of intensity

since the second half of the South Laurel game. Ashley really stepped up in

a big way,² said Lady Cards head coach Tim Pyles.

Eighth grade guard Heather Stearns added 18 points with 5 rebounds,

while Kara Gothrup netted 6 points with 3 rebounds and 3 assists, in just

over 29 minutes of play, as both earned the notice of the coach.

³I think with Heather the youthful jitters are gone and she is

understanding her role more each day, which is what you want out of a young

player. Kara is not a big scorer, but she stepped up and made 2 clutch

3-pointers. For us to be successful we certainly need 6-8 points a game out

of her,² said Pyles.

Lindsey Dishman tallied 4 points and Latoyia Green contributed 2 points

with 6 rebounds and 5 assists, as only five Lady Cards scored in the win.

The win improved Wayne County to 18-5 on the season.

Somerset, which dropped to 17-6, was led by the duo of Caiti Cowan and

Madison Flowers. Cowan shot 6 of 16 from the field and 7 of 13 from the free

throw line to tally a team best 19 points with 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 5

steals, in 31 minutes of action. Flowers added 14 points and 11 boards, as

seven different hosts scored in the contest.

³Somerset has a nice team, so this was a good win in a tough environment

on the road,² said Pyles.

Ashley Bell led all players with 11 points in the first quarter, as

Wayne County opened 6 of 17 from the field and claimed a 17-11 lead. Three

different Lady Jumpers scored in the frame, as the hosts converted on 5 of

15 field goal attempts.

The teams played on near-even terms in the second stanza as Somerset

used a 12-10 period edge, to leave the halftime score at 27-23.

The Lady Cards struggled to 3 of 14 shooting from the field in the

period, while the Lady Jumpers countered with 5 of 11 shooting from the

floor.

Caiti Cowan netted 11 points in the third quarter, as Somerset used an

18-14 run to knot the score at 41-41 after three horns.

Bell led the visitorsı attack with 8 points in the quarter.

Four different Lady Cards scored in the final eight minutes and Wayne

County used a 19-6 run, en route to claiming a 60-47 win. The winners made 5

of 12 from the field and 7 of 14 from the free throw line, during the

decisive spurt.

³I thought our defense down the stretch really made the difference, plus

on the offensive end we played with intensity and control. We finished the

game building on a lead, instead of just playing not to lose and thatıs a

real positive,² said Pyles. Somerset finished the game just 2 of 12 from the

field and 1 of 5 from the charity-stripe in the final period.

The Lady Jumpers finished 17 of 52 overall from the field for 33 percent

and connected on 1 of 14 3-pointers for 7 percent. The hosts tallied on 12

of 22 free throws for 55 percent and finished with 19 assists, 8 steals and

18 turnovers.

Wayne County, which claimed a 37-28 rebound edge, converted on 19 of 56

field goal attempts overall for 34 percent, which included 4 of 18 shooting

from 3-point range for 22 percent.

The Lady Cards made 18 of 31 free throws for 58 percent and totaled 18

assists with 13 steals, against 15 turnovers.

The Lady Cards returned to action on Friday night with a road game at

Garrard County. The Lady Lions are one of the most improved teams in the

12th Region. ³Somerset was a good win for us, but itıs back to work with two

more difficult games on the slate this week,² said Pyles.
