Monticello Lady Trojans drop 64-55 loss to Burgin
Melodie Phelps
News Editor

Things looked very familiar Friday night for Monticello Lady Trojan

Coach Marla Kelsch, as she watched her team fade in the final half and drop

a 64-55 loss to Burgin. It was nearly the same scenario she had seen Tuesday

evening, when Monticello lost to Harrodsburg.

³In the second half, we just let them get back in the game,² said

Kelsch, who watched an early advantage over Burgin disappear in the third

quarter. ³We werenıt playing defense...We didnıt get a hand in their face.²

Monticello jumped out to the quick start, taking an early lead. The

homestanding Lady Trojans appeared to have recovered from the loss earlier

in the week.

³We came out of the locker room playing well. Our mind was where it

needed to be,² said Kelsch.

Monticello led 18-12 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Trojans

scored 11 points in the second frame, and Burgin regained a little ground.

Monticello was up 29-26 at the half.

The third quarter opened just the opposite, as Burgin began to shoot

better. Monticello committed a lot of turnovers and took some ill-advised

shots.

³We didnıt take care of the ball like we should have,² said Kelsch. ³We

werenıt playing with any intensity.²

Burgin battled back and emerged from the quarter with a 42-39 lead.

Things didnıt get any better in the fourth quarter, as Burgin scored 22

points in the final frame to take the win.

Monticello was led by Sierra Adams with 22 points. Also in double

figures was Rachel Bristow with 15 points.

While their shooting in the second half left a lot to be desired, Kelsch

did note that her team shot better overall in this game than they have in

recent games.

They shot better than 40 percent overall from the field in Friday

nightıs game. They were 9 of 15 from the charity stripe for 60 percent.

³Weıre just in a slump that I have never experienced before,² said

Kelsch. ³Theyıve got to want it and that desire and want is just not there

right now.²

Monticello will close out regular season action this week with three

games. They played Lincoln County Monday night. They will play Berea on

Thursday and finish with Somerset on Friday night.

Then, it will be time to prepare for district tournament action. The

Lady Trojans lost the coin toss with McCreary Central and finished as the

number four seed in the district.

They will face top-seeded Wayne County in the opening game of the girls

tournament on Thursday, March 3 at 6:30 p.m.

³Weıve got to play all four quarters and that is something we havenıt

done since early this season,² said Kelsch. ³Against Wayne County, we have

to play all four quarters or it will be a nightmare.²

Russell County, who is hosting this yearıs tournament, will play

McCreary Central in the second game on Thursday night. That game will tip

off at 8 p.m. The girls district championship is set for Saturday, March 5

at 8 p.m.
