The man accused of robbing a local bank last summer was shot and killed
last Wednesday, following a police pursuit into Dyersburg, Tenn. Ronald
Wade, 51, who was originally from Russell Springs, died about an hour after
he was shot in the chest on Highway 182 near the Tennessee-Missouri state
line.
Wade was wanted for the robbery of BB&T Bank in Monticello, as well as a
Somerset bank. Monticello Police Detective Sheridan Wright said there was an
outstanding warrant for Wade in connection with the June 30, 2004 bank
robbery at BB&T, located in the Cumberland Crossing Shopping Center.
Wright said the warrants were issued for Wade following a joint
investigation by the Monticello Police Department, the Wayne County
Sheriff¹s Department, Kentucky State Police and the F.B.I. Officials with
the F.B.I. contacted Wright shortly after Wade had died in the shootout on
Wednesday, February 23.
Wade had allegedly robbed the Security Bank in Newbern, Tennessee at
about 3 p.m. Officials in Newbern said that he entered the bank with a
handgun, leaving a package he claimed was a remote control explosive device.
It was a scenario similar to the one used in the local robbery last summer.
Wade reportedly left the bank in a Chevrolet pickup truck with an
undisclosed amount of cash. According to information from the Dyersburg
State Gazette, Newbern Police were on the scene within minutes after bank
employees triggered a silent alarm.
The pickup truck was spotted by two Newbern officers, heading toward the
town of Dyersburg, and a high-speed chase began. Officer David Fisher became
the lead vehicle in the pursuit, following Wade on Interstate 155.
Wright said that he was informed that at some point Wade stopped his
truck, got out and started shooting at police officers who had been pursuing
him. Officer Fisher, who was still in his cruiser, was injured.
A Dyer County Sheriff¹s Department deputy told the State Gazette that
two Newbern officers arrived on the scene shortly after the gun battle
began. Newbern Police Investigator Doug Barr fired a shot through his
windshield at Wade.
Wade allegedly turned his pistol on Barr, and the injured Fisher rolled
from his cruiser on the pavement and fired at Wade from beneath the open car
door. Officials stated that Wade was shot four or five times in the chest.
He died about an hour later at Dyersburg Regional Medical Center.
Money from the Newbern bank was found in the seat of Wade¹s truck.
Officials noted that the package left at the bank by Wade was actually a
³mock bomb.²
Pictures of Wade, published in local and area newspapers following the
robberies at Cumberland Security Bank in Somerset on June 25 and the
Monticello robbery on June 30, helped lead to his identification. Wright
noted that a cooperative effort between agencies led to the warrants that
were issued for Wade¹s arrest in connection with these two incidents.
³Everybody just pulled their sources together,² said Wright.
