Police looking for perpetrators of elaborate fraud scheme

Police are continuing to look for leads that will lead them to two men

who perpetrated a bizarre scheme to rob a local man of a large sum of cash.

Monticello Police Detective Sheridan Wright said this a fraud scheme

that he has never heard of before, and officials in this area have not had

any similar incidents occur.

Monticello Police were dispatched to the parking lot of Burger King on

Tuesday, February 22 at 1 p.m. to investigate a reported robbery. After

interviewing the victim, police determined that fraud had occurred.

According to the victim, the incident began in the Tradeway Shopping

Center parking lot, when he gave an unidentified black male a ride to Burger

King. Once the two men arrived there, an unidentified white male approached

the vehicle, and all three engaged in a conversation and got into the

victimıs car.

Later, the unidentified black male and the unidentified white male began

to gamble. A short time later, the two managed to convince the victim to

join them in the gambling. After several bets, the victim went to his bank

and withdrew cash.

Wright said that the bag with the money was switched with another bag

and placed in the glove compartment of the victimıs vehicle. At this point,

the two unidentified men exited the victimıs vehicle and instructed him to

wait there. They assured him they would return and asked him not to leave

with all the cash. Several minutes passed and the perpetrators never

returned.

When the victim opened the glove compartment in his car, he found the

bag was only filled with napkins.

Following are descriptions of the two men, who police are seeking. the

black male is described as being approximately 50 to 60 years old, about 6ı

to 6ı2 and weighing approximately 225 pounds. He has a salt and pepper beard

and was wearing a ball cap.

The white male is described as being in his 50ıs, approximately 5ı10 and

of medium build.

Wright said that so far, police have not received any leads in this

case. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Monticello Police

Department at (606) 348-9313.
