The Wayne County Lady Cardinals traveled to Casey County last Tuesday
night to face the homestanding Lady Rebels in a 12th Region match-up.
The Lady Cards owned an impressive 20-5 record on the season and entered
the contest riding a four-game winning streak. Casey County entered with an
8-17 mark on the season.
Senior forward Ashley Bell scored 23 of her game high 24 points in the
first half, as Wayne County raced to an 18-1 lead and rolled to a 33-7
halftime advantage, en route to claiming a 63-48 road win.
Bell finished 8 of 16 from the field and 7 of 8 from the charity-stripe,
plus grabbed 5 steals with 4 rebounds, before fouling-out in just under 19
minutes of action.
Latoyia Green added 14 points and 8 boards, while Lindsey Dishman
tallied 9 points with 4 rebounds, as the Lady Cards improved to 21-5 on the
season.
³This was probably our best first half of the season. Just an all-around
solid effort, we got up by as much as 37 points in the second half and then
tried to keep anybody from getting hurt. Casey County was very physical with
a lot of pushing, so the second half was not very enjoyable basketball, but
we did what we had to do to get the win,² said Lady Cards head coach Tim
Pyles.
Kara Gothrup netted 7 points, as eight different Wayne County players
etched the scoring column.
Casey County, which dropped to 8-18, was led by the play of guard
Lindsey Hoskins. Hoskins scored 16 points, paced by 6 of 11 shooting from
the field and a 2 of 4 effort from the free throw line. The Lady Rebels
committed 30 fouls, including 18 in the rugged second half, plus were
plagued by 23 turnovers.
³I thought our defensive pressure really bothered them in the early
going and led to some easy baskets. Our intensity from the tipoff was a real
positive and that¹s something we¹ve really worked on as of late,² said
Pyles.
The duo of Demi Murphy and Lindsey Wilson tallied 8 points each, as
eight different Lady Rebels marked the scoring margin in the contest.
Ashley Bell netted 12 points in the opening quarter, as Wayne County
opened 7 of 14 from the field to race to an 18-1 lead. The hosts opened a
dismal 0 of 7 from the field and a Bethany Snow free throw was the only
thing that kept the Lady Rebels from a scoreless period.
Bell added 11 more points in the second stanza and the Lady Cards
converted on 8 of 10 free throws to claim a 15-6 frame edge, en route to
owning a 33-7 halftime advantage. Wayne County shot 36 percent from the
field in the opening half, while Casey County made just 3 of 16 field goal
attempts for 19 percent.
Five different Lady Rebels scored in the third quarter, as the hosts
used a 12-10 scoring edge to close the gap to 43-19 after three frames.
Lindsey Dishman paced the Lady Cards with 7 points in the period.
³Anytime you play with so much intensity in the first half and build a
big lead, it¹s always hard not to relax a bit and that¹s what we did,² said
Pyles.
Lindsey Hoskins netted 10 of her 16 points in the final 8 minutes, as
Casey County ended the contest with a 29-20 run to leave the final score at
63-48.
Latoyia Green paced the visitors with 7 points in the final period, as
Wayne County connected on 11 of 16 free throws to cruise to the road win.
Meg Latham tallied 4 points, while Chelsey Smith and Heather Stearns
finished with 2 points each. Kayla Jones contributed 1 point, as all 12 Lady
Cards on the roster saw action and eight different players notched the
scoring column.
Casey County finished 16 of 45 overall from the field for 36 percent and
converted on 4 of 10 3-pointers for 40 percent. The squad made 12 of 22 free
throws for 55 percent and totaled 12 steals against 23 turnovers.
Wayne County, which claimed a 28-22 rebound advantage, shot 17 of 48
overall from the field for 35 percent and tallied on 2 of 13 3-pointers for
15 percent. The winners made 27 of 40 free throws for 68 percent and totaled
14 steals against 20 turnovers.
Up next for the Lady Cards, now 21-5 on the season, was a Friday night
regular season finale at Rockcastle County. The Lady Rockets are ranked 5th
in the state and are the favorites in the 13th Region.
³Rockcastle County has a very good basketball team, so we¹ll have to
prepare for a real challenge,² said Pyles.
