Lady Cards defeat Monticello 64-41 in opening round of Girls 47th District Tournament

The Monticello Lady Trojans met Wayne County last Thursday night at

Russell Countyıs Laker Gym in the first game of the opening round of the

47th District Tournament.

Monticello entered with an 8-18 mark on the season and as the tourneyıs

#4 seed. Wayne County owned a 21-6 mark on the season and a perfect 6-0

tally in district play. The Lady Cards swept the regular season series,

including a 70-45 decision on January 17 at Cardinal Gym in their latest

match-up.

Wayne County raced to a 16-0 lead and never looked back en route to

claiming a 64-41 opening round win. Senior forward Ashley Bell paced the

winners with a team high 19 points, plus grabbed 9 rebounds with 5 steals,

as the Lady Cards improved to 22-6 on the season.

Bell finished 7 of 17 from the field and 4 of 6 from the charity-stripe,

while eighth grade guard Heather Stearns added 16 points, as two different

Lady Cards scored in double-digits. Stearns shot 6 of 14 from the field and

3 of 6 from the free throw line, plus tallied 7 rebounds with 4 steals.

³Ashley is a senior that knows the importance of post-season play and

stepped up in a big way. Ashley provided us with quality experience, while

with Heather being an eighth grader you never know how young players will

respond to the pressure of tournament play, but in this game she also

stepped up in a huge way,² said Lady Cards head coach Tim Pyles.

Wayne County also received solid play from the junior duo of Kara

Gothrup and Latoyia Green. Gothrup played 29 minutes and tallied 7 points, 3

rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals, while Green totaled 7 points with 6

boards. Nine different Lady Cards scored in the contest.

³I thought our defensive intensity and ball pressure were a big

difference in the game. We also opened with a 16-0 run, which allowed us to

relax a bit and not have to play as timid,² said Pyles.

Monticello, which dropped to 8-19, was led by the play of All-Tournament

selection Sierra Adams. Adams, a senior forward, scored a game high 20

points with a game best 12 rebounds in just under 31 minutes of action.

Adams converted on 8 of 10 free throws and 5 of 15 field goal attempts, as

just one Lady Trojan reached double figures.

³Sierra had a nice game...She put together a good second half,² said

Lady Trojan Coach Marla Kelsch.

Rachel Bristow added 8 points with 4 boards, while Alesha Gehring

contributed 6 points and 5 rebounds, as six different Monticello players

etched the scoring column. The Lady Trojans shot 40 percent from the field

and were plagued by 22 turnovers.

³I think we just came out with the jitters. Everytime we have played

Wayne County this season, we have started off slow in the first quarter,²

said Kelsch.

Wayne County opened the game with a 16-0 run and used a trio of scorers

in the first period to claim a 16-2 lead. Monticello opened just 1 of 9 from

the field and didnıt score until late into the opening quarter.

³We were shooting only 14 percent in the first quarter,² said Kelsch. ³I

think we were taking pretty good shots, we just couldnıt hit them.²

Early turnovers also hurt Monticello, Kelsch noted.

Ashley Bell led all scorers with 10 points in the first half, as the

Lady Cards used a 14-8 second stanza edge to push to a 30-10 halftime

advantage. A key stat in the opening 16 minutes was Wayne County attempted

35 shots from the field, while the Lady Trojans put up only 14 field goal

attempts.

Five different Lady Cards scored in the third frame, as the teams played

on near-even terms in the quarter. Monticello also placed five scorers in

the book, but was outscored 13-12 and trailed 43-22, after three horns.

Wayne County made 8 of 13 field goal attempts in the final period to

counter the 14 points of Sierra Adams, as the Lady Cards claimed a 64-41

win.

The Lady Trojans, which claimed a 34-32 rebound edge, shot about 40

percent overall from the field and made 3 of 10 3-pointers for 30 percent.

Monticello connected on 12 of 21 free throws for 57 percent and totaled 5

assists with 4 steals against 22 turnovers.

³I thought we played a pretty good second half,² said Kelsch. ³If we

had started off better, this would have been a much better game...Thatıs a

big margin to come back from against Wayne County.²

Wayne County shot 25 of 65 overall for 38 percent and tallied on 4 of 15

3-pointers for 27 percent. The squad netted 10 of 18 free throws for 56

percent and totaled 15 steals with 5 assists against 10 turnovers.

³I was proud of the way our team came out with the focus and intensity

needed to win the game. I thought we had a lot of people step up and do the

things needed to win the game. We do have to do a better job of making our

free throws, which is something thatıs not a new area of concern,² said

Pyles.

The loss ended the Lady Trojansı season at 8-19, while the Lady Cards

met McCreary Central on Saturday night in the championship game.

McCreary Central upset Russell County 41-33 on Thursday night and would

enter the match-up with a 15-11 record.
