The Wayne County Lady Cardinals met Garrard County last Thursday night
at McCreary Centralıs Raider Gym in the opening round of the Girls 12th
Region Tournament.
The Lady Cards entered as the champions of the 47th District with a 23-6
record, while the Lady Lions finished runner-up in the 46th District with a
16-12 record. The teams met just under three weeks earlier with Wayne County
claiming a 73-47 win at Garrard County.
Ashley Bell tallied a game high 19 points with a team high 10 rebounds,
as the Lady Cards used a 28-14 second half run to take a 54-37 opening round
win. Bell, a 5-11 senior forward, shot 7 of 12 from the field and 5 of 6
from the free throw line, to pace six different Lady Cards in the scoring
column.
Heather Stearns added 13 points with 3 rebounds and 3 assists, as two
Lady Cards netted double-figures. The junior duo of Kara Gothrup and Lindsey
Dishman tallied 7 points each, while Gothrup contributed a team best 4
assists.
³At this point of the season itıs all about winning the game and
advancing in the tournament and I thought we did a pretty good job of that.
Our depth was a big factor late, I think, plus we managed to take pretty
good care of the basketball,² said Lady Cards head coach Tim Pyles.
Latoyia Green chipped-in with 5 points and 6 boards while Meg Latham
netted 3 points with 4 rebounds, as 10 different Lady Cards played in the
win.
Wayne County shot 45 percent from the field and committed just 12
turnovers in the win.
Garrard County, which dropped to 16-13, was plagued by 26 turnovers and
shot just 36 percent from the field. Abby Parsons netted a team high 13
points, aided by 4 of 12 shooting from the field, which included a 3 of 9
effort from 3-point range.
³Garrard County has a very nice team and a big concern going into the
game was their inside-outside game. I thought defensively we did some good
things, which led to some easy offensive buckets,² said Pyles.
Sydney Napier added 9 points and Ashley Meadows totaled 8 points, as six
different Lady Lions scored in the contest.
Heather Stearns tallied 6 points in the opening frame, as Wayne County
made 7 of 13 field goal attempts to claim a 14-6 lead. Garrard County made
50 percent of their shots in the period, but was limited to only 6 field
goal attempts.
³In this game I thought we played pretty well in spurts. I thought we
opened both halves pretty solid and stepped up again late in the ball game,²
said Pyles.
Garrard County used the 11 second quarter points of Abby Parsons, all
during a 15-6 run, which gave the Lady Lions a 21-20 edge. The Lady Cards
ended the half with a 6-2 spurt of their own to claim a 26-23 halftime
advantage.
Both teams shot the ball very well in the first half as Garrard County
converted on 53 percent of their field goal attempts and Wayne County
answered with 52 percent shooting of their own, from the field.
The Lady Cards turned-up the defensive pressure in the third stanza and
used the 7 points of Heather Stearns to spark an 11-4 run. The Lady Lions
connected on just 2 of 15 field goal attempts in the quarter and trailed
37-27 after 24 minutes.
Ashley Bell tallied 10 points in the final period, as Wayne County ended
the game with a 17-10 scoring edge and cruised to a 54-37 win. The Lady
Cards made 9 of 12 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
³Free throws are so important and weıve had a couple games lately where
we didnıt convert and gives opponents life. I thought we did a better job of
that in this game, which also gives you momentum,² said Pyles.
A review of the stats shows Garrard County made 14 of 39 shots overall
for 36 percent and tallied on 4 of 13 3-pointers for 31 percent. The Lady
Lions connected on 5 of 10 free throws for 50 percent and finished with 26
turnovers.
The Lady Cards made 19 of 42 attempts overall for 45 percent and tallied
on 4 of 14 3-pointers for 29 percent. The squad converted on 12 of 16 free
throws for 75 percent and totaled 9 assists with 9 steals against 12
turnovers.
The win advanced the Lady Cards into a Monday night match-up with
tournament favorite South Laurel. South won at Wayne County earlier in the
season and has been ranked in the top 20 most of the season.
³Itıs the postseason, so you have to be ready to go each night. We just
have to prepare and be ready to play our best game,² said Pyles.
