W.C. Board recognized academic teams
Melodie Phelps
News Editor

It was all academic Monday night, as the Wayne County Board of Education

honored members of its three academic teams, which have continued the

tradition of excellence in competition this season. Academic team members

from Turner Intermediate, Lloyd Middle School and Wayne County High School

were introduced before a large crowd in the high school Media Center and

each received a plaque presented by board chairman Perry Elam.

Linda Jones, Public Information Officer for the school district, noted

that Turner Intermediateıs Junior Future Problem Solving team recently made

school history, finishing as runner-up in the state competition.

³They have qualified for the international competition, which will be

held in Lexington in June,² said Jones.

In addition to bringing home championship trophies, the three academic

teams have all brought home the prestigious Katherine Hume Award, which is

presented to teams that exhibit excellent sportsmanship. Following the

recognition, a reception was held to honor the academic team members and

their families. For more specific information on Wayne Countyıs academic

teams see related stories on page 6-B and 7-B of this edition.

Later in Mondayıs meeting, the board discussed exterior finishes for the

new middle school with architects from Lucas-Schwering, as they reviewed

drawings of several different color options for the structure. The board

selected brick colors for the building.

Superintendent John Dalton noted that the bid package for site

preparation for the new school has been completed and the project will be

bid within the next several weeks.

A stipulation regarding the position of district athletic director has

been removed by the board, following a discussion Monday night. Dalton noted

that the stipulation that the job cannot be held by an active coach in the

district had been added when the board approved the position. He stated that

it was not his recommendation to limit the position.

Dalton said his only recommendation was that the position be certified.

He indicated the stipulation is ³limiting² and makes it difficult to find

someone to do this job. Elam made the motion to remove the stipulation and

it was seconded by board member Patty Roberts. Elam, Roberts, Donna Blevins,

and Melissa Upchurch voted in favor of the change. Board member Larry Muse

abstained from the vote.

In other action, the board:

?Viewed a demonstration of enhanced safety features on new school buses

that were recently purchased.

?Agreed to take board meetings on the road for the next several months,

holding the monthly sessions at schools through the district. Next month,

the meeting will be held at Walker Elementary.

?Approved the school calendar for the 2005-2006 school year. The first

day for students next year will be August 4 and the last day is scheduled

for May 16. Dalton noted this calendar is very similar to the one that the

district is operating under now.

?Approved the 2005-2006 school council allocations, which totaled

$5,621,113.

?Awarded the bid for seven trailers recently declared surplus property

to Wayne Realty and Development Company for the high bid of $1,325. The

purchaser will provide removal.

?Approved a request by Turner Intermediate Education (TEA) for a field

trip to either Cincinnati or Washington, D.C.
