Monticello students take Tennis 101 on the court

Monticello high school and middle school students are taking on a new

competitive vocabulary. Recently the Monticello team took to the court with

attitude and stance being their first steps into the sport.

The co-ed team of 24, coached by Gary Abbott, are excited about the

upcoming season. They have been practicing at the Monticello Park during the

past weeks, learning the rules and fundamentals of the game, commented

assistant coach David Cook. He said, ³Right now theyıre learning the basics

for the first year, volleying the ball across the court.²

Coach Abbott said, ³The kids are having a lot of fun as tennis is also

an individual sport. I like going in the year with underclassmen, high and

middle working squad, and theyıre showing a lot of interest.²

Trojans and Lady Trojans had their first away match last Tuesday at

Clinton County. They lost the single match that lasted over one hour with

freshman Adam Denney losing 9 to 8 on a tie breaker.

Monticello ended with three wins in doubles: sophomore Ben Cook and

eighth grader Rodney Brown, freshman Dehkota Rose and sophomore Chelsea

Neal, sophomore Rebecca Fairchild and freshman Brianna Allen.

The next road trip for the tennis team will be at McCreary Central on

April 19 at 5 p.m.
