Commemorative stagecoach ride is set for Saturday
U.S. Representative Harold Rogers will join with local residents
Saturday when history is recreated as part of the Monticello-Burnside
Com-memorative Stagecoach Ride. Rogers is scheduled to be among passengers
to ride the replica of the original stagecoach during the last leg of its
journey.
The ride, which will actually begin in the Mill Springs area, will
conclude in downtown Monticello at the William Crenshaw Kennedy Jr. Memorial
Museum, which will become home to the replica of the original stagecoach.
From 1896 until 1915, a stagecoach ran from Monticello to Burnside,
Kentucky. The improvement of roads in Wayne County provided an excellent
opportunity for an enterprising businessman to begin a means of
transportation that would allow the general public to travel in comfort.
A route between Monticello and Burnside made it possible for the
citizens of Wayne County to connect with the railroad station in Burnside
and would ensure improved delivery of the United States mail. The original
stagecoach was sold many years ago to the Wells Fargo Bank in California and
has been on display in Los Angeles. The replica stagecoach was built
recently after a group of interested individuals came together for the
project.
Things will get underway Saturday at 10 a.m. at Dunaganıs Store. A
limited number of passengers will be able to ride the stagecoach along
different legs of the route. Tickets are currently available and anyone who
participates is asked to make a $100 donation per ticket to the museum.
There are eight designated stops along the route, that begins at
Dunaganıs Store in the Mill Springs area, travels along Old Highway 90 past
the West-Metcalfe House, through the Gap of the Ridge and Steubenville.
Stops along the route include the West-Metcalfe House, Fantasy Yachts,
Winchester Road, Richardsonıs Store, Steubenville Baptist Church, Saint
Peterıs Catholic Church, Lyons Plumbing and Electric and then the museum.
The ride will begin at 10 a.m. A special ceremony will be held at the
museum at 2 p.m. For more information about the event or for tickets,
contact Harlan Ogle at (606) 340-2300 or at (606) 348-6377. The museumıs
