Wayne County senior Steven Sexton just wrapped-up a memorable week for
any high school basketball player. The 6-1 guard was named first team
All-State by both the Herald Leader and Courier Journal, plus played in the
Kentucky-Ohio All-Star game at Thomas Moore College. Sexton capped-off the
weekend by being selected to participate in the prestigious Kentucky-Indiana
All-Star Classic, after tryouts over the weekend at Georgetown College.
³Iıve felt all along heıs one of the best players in Kentucky this year
and his play in the Ohio game and at the tryouts shows that. I really
thought he should be in the running for Mr. Basketball and while I wouldnıt
say he deserved it, he certainly was as deserving as those in the running
for it,² said Wayne County head coach Rodney Woods.
Sextonıs career numbers at Wayne County are very impressive. The
All-State honoree finished with 1,900 points, 644 rebounds, 344 assists, 312
3-point goals and 203 steals. The fifth all-time leading scorer in school
history set a single season record with 100 3-pointers this season, breaking
the old record of 96 by David Clark in 1989. Sexton also claimed the single
game record for free throws made with 24 against West Jessamine, a mark that
stood since 1960.
As a four-year starter for the Cardinals, Sextonıs teams won 91 games,
were 28-0 against 47th District opponents with four district titles and two
12th Region championships.
³Steven is a guy that never gave up all season and itıs always fun to
coach guys that want to play at the next level. Guys like him are
self-motivated and they want to not only play for the success of their team,
but also to try to reach the college level,² said Woods.
Sexton netted 7 points on April 9, in Kentuckyıs loss to the Ohio
All-Stars, at Thomas Moore College. The event showed how well Sexton could
compete with the stateıs best, a fact that carried over into last weekendıs
Kentucky All-Star tryouts.
The stalwart was one of just 13 All-Stars selected after tryouts at
Georgetown College. Sexton joins Mr. Basketball Dominic Tilford of
Jefferstown and a trio of Trinity players on the Kentucky All-Stars roster.
The Kentucky-Indiana All-Star games will be held June 18 at Diddle Arena
in Bowling Green and a week later on June 25 at Conseco Fieldhouse in
Indianapolis.
Sexton joins former teammate Tyrone Green and David Phillips as one of
only three Wayne County players to earn the Kentucky All-Star honor.
³David, Tyrone and Steven all prepared very hard for the tryouts and
showed up in excellent physical shape. A lot of guys just show up and play,
but the thing all three of those guys did was pushed themselves to be in
great condition. All three guys weıve had make it were very special players,
but I think Steven has had to work the hardest to make himself the type of
player he is,² said Woods.
Sexton also felt his conditioning was one of his strengths in the
tryouts.
³Some of the guys hadnıt touched a ball much since the season ended. The
first session or two guys were making their shots, but after that things got
tough and I was able to keep going hard, which really helped me in the later
workouts,² said Sexton.
The craziness of the past week wasnıt lost on the stalwart.
³Everything thatıs happened has been so crazy and wild. I never dreamed
of all the great things happening like this. Itıs just an unbelievable honor
to not only represent our county, but our state against an arch rival like
Indiana,² said Sexton.
Sexton remains uncommitted on his college choice.
³Iıve talked with several schools and hopefully my play in the tryouts
will also open some doors,² said Sexton.
Practice for the Kentucky All-Stars will begin on weekends soon as the
team prepares to face Indiana on June 18 at WKUıs Diddle Arena.
