A local man was killed and a woman has been charged with murder,
following a tragic two-vehicle accident on KY 1275 near Fall Creek on
Tuesday, May 10.
Eric Adkins, 23, of Rt. 3, Monticello died of multiple injuries,
including blunt force trauma to the left side of his chest, according to
Wayne County Deputy Coroner Forrest Hicks. Adkins was pronounced dead at the
Wayne County Emergency Room at approximately 3:45 p.m.
Emma Bertram, 45, of Rt. 5, Monticello, has been charged with murder in
connection with the crash. Wayne County Sheriff James Lynn Hill said that
Bertram was driving a Chevrolet truck and was traveling south on KY 1275,
when she collided with a northbound 2002 Lincoln, which was driven by
Adkins. The accident occurred at approximately 2:14 p.m., about a mile and a
half north of Monticello.
A passenger in Adkins¹ vehicle, Rodney Blevins, 27, of Monticello, was
injured in the accident and was taken to the Wayne County Hospital for
treatment.
Bertram, who was taken to the Wayne County Hospital, was originally
charged with manslaughter second degree and assault first degree. The
Sheriff¹s Department obtained a search warrant in order to collect a blood
sample from Bertram. Sheriff James Lynn Hill said results of that test are
pending.
According to the citation issued for Bertram¹s arrest, she participated
in a breathalyzer test, but refused any other field sobriety tests. The
Sheriff¹s Department issued a statement on Wednesday, noting that the
collision is suspected to be alcohol related.
Bertram appeared in Wayne District Court Wednesday, May 11, where she
entered a plea of not guilty to the original charge. A motion was made to
upgrade the charge of manslaughter second degree to murder, which was
sustained. No bond has been set for Bertram, who has been lodged in the
Wayne County Detention Center.
The Wayne County Sheriff¹s Office was assisted by Kentucky State Police
Trooper Parrish Baker with accident reconstruction. Hill said the
investigation is continuing.
Adkins is survived by his parents, Jerry and Diane Adkins, of
Monticello. Funeral services were held Friday, May 13 at the chapel of the
Marvin S. Hicks Funeral Home. Complete obituary information is included on
page 6-A of this edition.
