Wayne County middle school volleyball program
Wayne County Volleyball recently embarked on its first season for a
middle school program, and according to Coach William Shearer the program
provides a good foundation for girls who want to participate at the varsity
level.
³We are starting to build a good foundation for the high school
program,² said Shearer. ³Middle school volleyball is important because
instead of teaching girls how to play when they become freshmen, they are
now learning all the skills before they get there.²
The first team finished with a record of 7-2. The second team had a
record of 5-4, and the third team had a record of 3-4.
³This middle school program should just make things easier for the
student athletes when they get to the high school and for the coaches,²
Shearer said. ³Fundamentals, techniques and rotations were the main emphasis
of this middle school season.²
Shearer said that for example at the start of practice only five girls
could get the ball over the net serving overhand.
³They had to learn how to hit it overhand, and we wouldnıt let them
serve it underhand,² said Shearer. ³At the present time, 17 of the girls can
serve it overhand and get it over the net.²
Shearer noted that overhand serving is a tough thing to do and most
schools that play at the middle school level serve it underhand.
³So, it has been a plus for us to be able to get the overhand serve
down, and gave us many more points off serves than other teams,² he pointed
out.
Next year the middle school team will start back with practice after the
girls and boys basketball seasons are completed. Shearer said that also next
year there will be a sixth grade team, as well as the seventh and eighth
grade team.
Following are members of this yearıs middle school volleyball team:
