The stars and stripes decorated hundreds of graves throughout Elk Spring
Cemetery The flags appear annually on veteransı graves in the local cemetery,
thanks to the effort of the local Disabled American Veterans organization.
Veterans like Tom Blevins, who is secretary of the DAV, feels that this
is a very important observance.
³This is to honor the veterans who have fought for our country and to
give them a little recognition for Memorial Day,² said Blevins, as he and
other volunteers prepared to take on the task of placing flags throughout
the cemetery.
Itıs a pretty big job, since Blevins noted there are about 500 graves in
Elk Spring Cemetery that are decorated with flags each year. Many of the DAV
members are physically unable to help with the task.
In past years the JROTC has helped with placing flags on graves.
This year, a crew of 10 to 12 inmates from the Wayne County Detention
Center worked Friday morning to make sure every veteranıs grave had a flag.
³I think this is something good for the inmates to do,² said Wayne
County Jailer Ray Upchurch. ³We are honored to do it.²
Upchurch said he felt this was a very worthwhile task and hopes that the
jail can be involved again next time.
Blevins said that flags are provided by the DAV. They are displayed
throughout the Memorial Day holiday. Then, they are collected and displayed
again at Veterans Day.
³We want people to know that we are trying to honor our veterans
whenever we can,² said Blevins. ³This is just a small way of doing that.²
The DAV also hosted a Memorial Day service on Monday at Elk Spring.
