Monticello School celebrates 100 years

Itıs a birthday party and everyone is invited. On Saturday, June 11,
Monticello Independent School will celebrate 100 years, and Superintendent
Donnie Robison hopes to see the school filled with former students,
teachers, staff members, as well as members of the community for the event.
³Itıs not everyday that you get the opportunity to be associated with a
100th anniversary,² said Robison, as he talked about this weekendıs
celebration.
Planning this event has meant scouring through a lot of school history,
looking at old yearbooks and talking with former teachers and
administrators. According to historical accounts, the school was actually
voted into existence on June 24, 1905 by the people of Monticello.
Monticello Graded School began in September of 1905 with more than 200
students attending. (A more in-depth school history is included in a special
Monticello Independent School section in this edition of The Outlook.)
Organizing this event has also given Robison and other school personnel
a chance to look ahead to the future of education at Monticello Independent
School administrators plan the construction of a new middle school and high
school
building, this may be the last opportunity the public will have to tour the
old 1923 building.
Robison met with architects Friday regarding the new construction
project. The district was awarded $1.8 million in state funds for the
building, which will include 20 classrooms and a new office suite. The
remainder of the project will be funded through local bonding.
Robison expects that ground may be broken for the new building, which
will be constructed in what is now the auditorium parking lot, sometime this
fall.
School tours will be a part of Saturdayıs celebration, which will begin
at 10 a.m. with registration. Robison said the ceremony will be held in the
schoolıs gymnasium. Robison will speak, as well as a recent Monticello
School graduate and a former administrator.
After that, the school will be open for tours and a photographer will be
available to take pictures of anyone who wants them made. Robison hopes that
this event has a feel similar to the All-School Reunion which was held at
Monticello for several consecutive years.
Robison said he would like for anyone who was ever associated with the
school or who had any interest in Monticello Independent School to stop by
Saturday. It will be an informal event, he noted, and visitors can drop by
and visit the school.
³After all, this is their school,² said Robison. ³We hope this is an
exciting event for everyone. It certainly is for me....We want everyone to
come and celebrate the beginning of the second century of Monticello
School.²
