Bertram and Burnett are indicted on murder charges

Two local residents who are facing murder charges have been served with

indictments from the grand jury, according to the Wayne County Sheriffıs

Office. Emma Bertram and Rodney Burnett were both indicted by the Wayne

County Grand Jury during its regular session last Tuesday, June 21.

Emma Bertram was indicted on charges of murder, assault first degree,

and operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

These charges stem from a two-vehicle accident on May 10 in which the

Chevrolet truck Bertram was driving collided with a Lincoln driven by Eric

Adkins.

Adkins died of multiple injuries, including blunt force trauma to the

left side of his chest. He was pronounced dead at the Wayne County Hospital

Emergency Room.

According to reports from the Sheriffıs Department, alcohol was

suspected to be a factor in the crash.

A $250,000 property bond on Bertram was transferred from Wayne District

Court.

The Wayne County Grand Jury also returned an indictment against Rodney

Burnett, charging him with murder. The murder charge is a result of an

altercation which took place earlier this month, when Gregg Jones was

stabbed and then dragged to Town Creek.

According to reports, an argument between the two men ended with Burnett

allegedly stabbing Jones and then dragging his body over a hill and down to

the creek.

A $250,000 cash bond was set for Burnett.

The Wayne County Sheriffıs Office reports that several other sealed

indictments returned by the grand jury were also executed on Friday, June

24.

An indictment returned against Jacob Scott Evans charged him with two

counts of burglary third degree and failure to comply with Kentuckyıs sex

offender registry. Bond for Evans was set at $7,500 or twice the property

bond. Evans is also being held on a fugitive warrant from Florida with no

bond, according to the Sheriffıs office.

Lonnie Bertram was indicted on the charge of tampering with physical

evidence. Bond was set at $2,500 or twice the property bond for Bertram.

The grand jury returned an indictment against Thomas McWhorter, charging

him with 16 counts of rape first degree. Bond for McWhorter was set at

$1,000,000 cash.

Jamie Lee Massengale was indicted on two counts of burglary third

degree. Bond for Jamie Massengale was transferred from Wayne District Court.

An indictment returned against Maria Sue Massengale charged her with two

counts of burglary third degree. Bond was transferred from Wayne District

Court.

Sandra Garner was indicted on the charge of forgery second degree. Bond

for Garner was set at $500 cash.

The Monticello Police Department also reports that three individuals

were arrested Monday, June 27 on drug charges.

Charles Taylor was charged with trafficking in a controlled substance

first degree. He was lodged in the Wayne County Detention Center with bond

set at $50,000 cash.

Brian West of McCreary County was charged with trafficking in a

controlled substance first degree, possession of drug paraphernalia, and

persistent felony offender second degree. West was lodged in the Wayne

County Detention Center with bond set at $100,000 cash.

Both of these indictments are due to undercover buys made by the

Monticello Police Department and the Lake Cumberland Drug Task Force.

Monticello Police Officers also arrested Dewight Appleby and charged him

with trafficking in a controlled substance second degree and possession of

drug paraphernalia.

Grand jury indictments are public record and are filed in the Wayne

Circuit Clerkıs office. Readers are reminded that indictments by the grand

jury do not indicate guilt, only that further court action may be necessary

in a case.
