Itıs time for beautiful baby contests, truck pulls, demolition derbies
and carnival rides. The 2005 Wayne County Fair and Horse Show begins Friday,
July 1 with a full slate of events.
The nine-day fair will continue through Saturday, July 9, with a
schedule of events for the whole family. While the events are the same,
there are some schedule changes.
³There are a few changes this year,² noted Keith Bertram, president of
the Wayne County Fair Board.
For example, Monday has traditionally been beauty pageant night at the
fair. All those pageants will move to Saturday this year. Also, Bertram
noted that there will only be one night for the truck and tractor pulls this
year. This has allowed the fair board to add a new event, the mud run which
will be on Friday, July 9.
Bertram said that basically the mud run includes a large mud pit that
participants drive through either with mud buggies or other four-wheel type
vehicles.
³Itıs a growing event,² said Bertram. ³I think the Clinton County Fair
has done this, and itıs the first time that weıve tried it.²
This yearıs fair begins Friday morning with the Mini Olympics, which are
scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. That evening is
the championship horse show, which begins at 6 p.m. It is also Beautiful
Baby Night at the Fair. Those contests begin at 7 p.m.
Saturdayıs highlights include the Miss Wayne County Fair Pageant, as
well as other various pageants. They begin at 6 p.m.
Sunday is free admission day to the fair. The motorcycle show will be
held at noon and the doll show will begin at 1 p.m. That evening the gospel
singing will be held at 7 p.m.
The annual fireworks display is scheduled for Monday, July 4. Also, the
truck and tractor pull will begin at 7 p.m. on Monday. Bertram said the
fireworks display will be after dark at about 10 p.m.
The demolition derbies are usually some of the most well-attended fair
events. The first one this year is set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 5.
Expo exhibits will be set up Wednesday morning and the viewing will
begin at 4 p.m. that day.
Highlights of Thursdayıs schedule include the ATV pull, as well as
wrestling. On Friday, the second demolition derby is set to begin at 7 p.m.
On the final day of the fair, the pet show is scheduled to begin at 8:30
a.m. That evening the mud run will begin at 7 p.m.
³We just hope everyone will come out to the fair and enjoy themselves,²
said Bertram. ³We hope that we have something that is of interest to
everyone.²
Season passes are currently on sale for this yearıs fair. They are $25
and are available at all local banks. Admission to the fair will remain the
same this year, with the exception of the nights for the truck and tractor
pull and the demolition derby.
Brochures with complete fair schedules, as well as contact information
for each event, are available in businesses around Monticello. Anyone with
general questions should call the Wayne County Extension Office at (606)
