Bambi Circle will receive blacktop
Melodie Phelps
News Editor

"Before the first snow falls you will have blacktop on Bambi Circle."

That statement, made by State Representative Ken Upchurch on Monday morning,

brought cheers from the crowd of nearly a dozen residents from that area who

had gathered.

The announcement capped what many residents say has been a lengthy

effort to get blacktop for the winding rural road near Lake Cumberland.

Upchurch said the project will be funded through the statešs Rural Secondary

Road System. The bid was let for the .65 miles of blacktop in Frankfort on

Friday.

"For those who live on Bambi Circle, every day is a good day...But today

is an even better day than we usually experience," said Harlan Ogle, a Bambi

Circle resident, who addressed his neighbors following Upchurchšs

announcement. "Representative Ken Upchurch has brought us news that wešve

waited patiently to hear. Our road is going to be improved and paved."

"After years of skillfully dodging potholes and ruts, we will be able to

drive on the circle without running the risk of bouncing off the road into

the ditch,˛ Ogle said. "We can finally see the end to the gravel washing

down the hill to accumulate in unsightly piles of rocks."

Ogle said that efforts to obtain blacktop on Bambi Circle have fallen on

"deaf ears." The issue has been discussed by county government on several

occasions over the past few years.

Upchurch said that he became aware of the need for blacktop on Bambi

Circle quite some time ago. He said residents had approached him and asked

for help with the problem.

Upchurch petitioned the Transportation Cabinet to have this road

blacktopped. He said Monday that he was pleased with the reaction from

residents along the road.

"This is great," said Harvey Barrett, who has resided on Bambi Circle

for 19 years. "It has been a long time coming."

Barrett said the road was gravel when he first moved there, but later

the county came and put chip and seal on it. He said that was the last major

work that was done on Bambi Circle, besides patching the road.

"I think this is the greatest thing that has happened since this all

started," said Larry Ratliff, who resides on the road. "This is a wrong that

has been righted."
