D.A.A.D. "Back to School Bash" a success
On Friday the local Defensive Action Against Drugs hosted its second annual
Back to School Bash.
This yearıs event was a marked improvement over last yearıs event. The
Back to School Bash was held at the Aspire Center.
Over 400 people were in attendance during the dayıs events. School aged
children and the adults accompanying them enjoyed many activities throughout
the day.
Children received school supplies and treats, enjoyed playing games and
receiving prizes, food, music, swimming, listening to the Monticello
Childrenıs Choir, and hearing a motivational speech given by Aaron Anderson.
All of the dayıs events were free for the public.
After the dayıs events were over, a host of volunteers, teens, and
pre-teens moved to the Family Life Center at Steubenville Baptist Church to
enjoy a free rock concert.
Aaron Anderson gave a motivational speech for those who missed the
activities at the Aspire Center.
Performances were given by Davidik and Live Fish, both from Somerset.
The bands gave outstanding performances.
The performances given by the bands were inspirational and were
thoroughly enjoyed by all who were fortunate enough to be in attendance.
Gifts were given to all youths in attendance and everyone enjoyed the
music, fellowship, and food.
Events such as the Back to School Bash and the highly successful Hooked
on Fishing that Defensive Action Against Drugs have for bettering the community.
Not only do we hope to combat the existing drug epidemic and help people
and families with existing drug problems, we desire to prevent our future
generations from becoming involved with drugs and alcohol from the start.
It is our hope that through fun and educational activities for the youth
of our community we can educate the younger generations of the dangers and
consequences of becoming involved in drug and/or alcohol abuse.
In addition, we hope to encourage the youth of Wayne County to make
positive choices that will consequently affect the rest of their, and
indirectly our own lives.
Each and every one of us< no matter the age, social status, religion, or
outlook on life< have at one point felt that something was lacking in our
lives and we were somehow insignificant.
In todayıs society, it seems that more and more people are turning to
drugs and alcohol in an attempt to fill the void, not understanding that
only creates a bigger void that requires more and more drugs or alcohol to
numb the senses.
The youth of our community needs positive role models and activities
which are drug and alcohol free. They also need to understand that they do
not need drugs or alcohol to have a good time.
Events such as the Back to School Bash and the Hooked on Fishing Not on
Drugs simply could not happen without the support of volunteers and
sponsors. We truly appreciate the outpouring of support we have received
thus far from the community.
Defensive Action Against Drugs works in conjunction with Operation UNITE
to host these events. Operation UNITE (unlawful narcotics investigation,
treatment & education) is a program created by Senator Hal Rogers to combat
the rampant drug
problem in 29 counties in Southern and Eastern Kentucky. If anyone is
interested in helping with future events or in any other way, Defensive
Action Against Drugs meets at the Aspire Center on the fourth Thursday of
every month beginning at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is always invited to attend.
